The pattern worth internalizing: costs vary by material by a factor of five, but failure modes barely vary at all. How to choose

Ask price questions per square foot: Totals hide scope changes. Per-square-foot pricing on a written square footage is comparable across bids.
Treat 'it depends' as a good sign: Soil, load, climate and jurisdiction genuinely change the answer. A contractor who gives you a confident universal number on permits or base depth is guessing.
Check the boring things first: License, insurance, written scope, base spec, drainage, warranty. Materials and colors are the easy part of this decision.

How much does hardscaping cost per square foot?

How long does hardscaping last?

Fixr puts standard paver driveways at 25 to 50 years and permeable paver systems at 35 to 100 years. Those lifespans assume a correctly built base — a paver surface over a poorly compacted base can begin moving within a few seasons.

Why is hardscaping so expensive?

Because most of it is excavation, aggregate, machinery and labor rather than the visible surface. Fixr puts patio labor at $5 to $10 per square foot for common materials and up to about $25 for the ones cut individually, and site prep on a retaining wall at $500 to $1,000 before a single block is laid.

Do I need a permit for hardscaping?

It depends on your jurisdiction and what you're building. Retaining walls are most commonly regulated — Fixr notes walls over three to four feet typically need a permit, with engineering generally required above four feet, while stressing that regulations vary by locality. Call your local building department; that's the only reliable answer.

Why did my patio sink?

Base or water, nearly always. Fixr attributes uneven and sunken paver sections to water infiltration and weakening sand layers. Repair runs $3 to $15 per square foot for a sinking patio and $7 to $30 per square foot for paver repair — but if the base itself is wrong, only rebuilding fixes it.
