Fixr's 2025 data puts a typical professionally installed system at a $1,400 national average with a $750 to $2,000 typical range, and monthly monitoring anywhere from $3 to $60 depending on provider. The monitoring contract, not the hardware, is where most of the long-term money and most of the regret lives.

What security services actually cover
Split the offer apart before you evaluate it. Equipment is the panel, sensors, cameras and keypad - Fixr puts equipment alone at $200 to $1,000. Installation is labor at $60 to $150 per hour, or $80 to $400 for a professional install. Monitoring is the recurring service where a monitoring center watches your alarm and calls you or dispatches. Fixr's example $1,400 install breaks down as roughly $500 equipment, $400 labor, $400 first-year monitoring and $100 activation.
The critical question nobody volunteers: do you own the equipment or is it leased? If it is leased or financed inside the monitoring agreement, leaving early can mean returning gear, paying it off, or both - and the system may not work with another provider. If you own it outright, you can change monitoring companies or drop monitoring entirely. Ask for the answer in writing before you sign anything.
Contract length is the other trap. Fixr notes that most standard contracts require three years, while many companies now offer month-to-month at a higher upfront equipment cost. Neither is wrong, but they are very different products. A three-year agreement at $45 a month is a commitment north of $1,600 in monitoring alone, and it typically continues whether or not you are happy with the service.
Also understand what monitoring actually does. It is a call center that receives a signal and follows a call list. It does not stop a break-in. Police response times, verified-response rules and permit requirements vary enormously by city, and in many places dispatch is not immediate. That does not make monitoring worthless - it makes it a specific service worth a specific price, rather than the vague safety it is usually sold as.

Ask who owns the equipment, in writing
Owned, leased, or financed inside the contract. This one answer determines whether you can ever leave without paying twice.
Get the total contract cost, not the monthly
Multiply the monthly by the term and add activation and equipment. That is the number to compare against alternatives.
Read the auto-renewal clause before you sign
Ask what the renewal term is, what the cancellation notice window is, and how notice must be delivered. Get the answer in the contract, not from the salesperson.
Never sign at the door
The Insurance Information Institute's advice applies here: "Don't be rushed into signing a contract with any company. Instead, collect business cards and get written estimates."
Check whether monitoring can move with you
If you may move within the contract term, ask what happens. Relocation terms vary and are almost never favorable by default.
The wrong service call is the expensive one
Most people booking security work are buying a diagnosis, not a job - and the trade you pick decides what diagnosis you get. Book the wrong specialist and you pay a call-out fee to be told it is somebody else's problem.
- Describe the symptom What you can observe, and when it started. Not what you think it is.
- Ask what the visit includes Whether the diagnostic fee is credited against the work is a question with a real answer.
- Get the scope in writing A number with no line items cannot be compared to a second number.
