A motorised bolt has none of the strength you unconsciously apply to a sticking door. Fit one to a dropped or misaligned door and you have bought a lock that jams.
What is access control and smart locks?
A smart lock replaces your existing deadbolt with one driven by a motor, a keypad or an app. Fitting it takes minutes; making it reliable depends on the door. The bolt must throw fully into the strike with no resistance at all, because a motor cannot lean on a door the way your hand does. Access control extends that to codes you can issue and revoke.

How access control and smart locks actually works
Assessing the door, and measuring the backset
Close the door and throw the existing deadbolt with two fingers. If it needs a shove, a lift or a firm turn, the door has dropped or the strike is misaligned. Then measure: the backset is the distance from the door edge to the centre of the bore and comes in two common dimensions, and bore diameter and door thickness must sit inside the new lock's stated range.

Strike alignment and the frame behind it
The bolt should enter the strike centrally and travel its whole throw into a box or deep mortise, not scrape the edge of a plate. Where a door has settled, realigning the strike comes before the lock goes anywhere near it.

A keypad works with no phone, account or network, which suits children, older relatives and tradespeople. App access handles remote entry and time-limited permissions. A key override costs nothing to keep. Decide the mix before the model.

Codes, credentials and revocation
Access control is about issuing and withdrawing access, not opening a door. Give each person their own code, so a departure means deleting one entry rather than re-coding everyone. Temporary codes cover one-off visits.

Power, network and what fails when
Smart locks run on batteries and usually warn before they die. Connectivity is needed for remote access and notifications, not normally for the keypad. Knowing which functions survive a dead network and which a dead battery separates an inconvenience from a lockout.

When access control and smart locks is the wrong call
When saying yes is the wrong move:
- The door binds, drags or has dropped on its hinges. Fix the door first. A motor cannot do what your wrist has been quietly doing for years, and the lock gets blamed for the door's fault.
- The frame around the strike is soft, split or filled. Electronic access on a jamb that gives way under a shoulder is theatre. Reinforce the frame first; it is cheaper than the lock.
- The door is not the weak point. A smart deadbolt beside a single-glazed sidelight, an unlocked patio slider or a garage service door on the latch changes nothing about how someone gets in.
- Nobody will manage the codes. Access control is only worth having if credentials are issued individually and revoked. Unmanaged, it becomes one shared code and a false sense of an audit trail.
- It is a rented property. Deadbolt replacement is usually a landlord decision, and many tenancies require written permission and a key or code handed over. Ask before drilling anything.

- Replacing a deadbolt like-for-like on a door that already locks with two fingers
- Fitting the escutcheon, batteries and mounting plate supplied with a consumer lock
- Replacing short strike screws with long screws that reach the framing behind the jamb
Call a licensed pro
- The door needs easing, planing or rehanging - joinery, and done badly it leaves a door that never seals again
- The bore is enlarged or offset from previous hardware, so a new lock will not seat squarely, or the jamb is soft and the strike needs relocating into fresh timber
- More than one door on a shared credential system, with common users across entrances
- Anything wired - an electric strike, a maglock or a powered gate, involving a power supply, fail-safe versus fail-secure behaviour and code-set egress
- A fire-rated or multi-point locking door, where the hardware is part of a tested assembly
What to check when hiring for access control and smart locks
- Does this door close and lock with two fingers, and if not, what needs doing? The question the whole installation depends on. Anything short of a confident yes means door work comes before lock work.
- What is my backset and door thickness, and does the lock I want fit both? A lock that does not fit is the most avoidable failure here, and it is discovered after the old one is off.
- Will the strike be repositioned, and are the screws long enough to reach the framing? Bolt throw into a properly fixed strike is what resists force. Short screws into trim look identical and do nothing.
- With no internet, does the keypad still unlock - and how do I get in on flat batteries? Two different failures. If the battery answer needs an item you do not carry, solve that now rather than on the doorstep.
- Can I give each person their own credential, delete just theirs, and see it in the log? The whole point of access control. A log recording only "unlocked" tells you nothing useful.
