The spread on those ranges is not contractor greed - it is real variation. CBS News points to four drivers of 2026 pricing: higher federal efficiency requirements, the refrigerant transition, skilled-labor shortages, and electrical or duct upgrades that only surface once someone opens up the house.
Duct work is the most common surprise line item. HVAC Project Cost puts duct repairs at $500 to $1,500 and full duct replacement at $2,000 to $5,000 on top of the equipment. CBS News cites roughly $3,000 for duct replacement on an average home. If your quotes vary wildly, duct scope is often the reason - check whether each bid includes it.
Be skeptical of any single national average. What matters is what three local bids say for the same defined scope. Ask every bidder to price the identical equipment tier and the identical duct work so the numbers are actually comparable.

- Financing quoted as a monthly payment hides the price Always get the cash price in writing first. Then evaluate the financing separately, with the APR and total interest stated.
