Insulation costs

Whole-home insulation runs about $2,000-$7,400 nationally, averaging roughly $4,700 for a 2,000 sq ft home, per Fixr's January 2026 cost data. Blown-in insulation costs about $1.65-$3.80 per square foot installed, and spray foam is the expensive option at roughly $2.75-$6.50 per square foot in new construction and $3.15-$7.50 in existing walls.

Insulation is priced by the square foot, but quotes hide two different square-foot numbers: material only, and material plus labor. Fixr puts material-only fiberglass at $0.30-$1.50 per sq ft and material-only cellulose at $0.60-$2.30, while labor typically runs $30-$80 per hour and accounts for 30-50% of the total project. When a contractor quotes you "$1.20 a foot," ask which number that is.

Here are the ranges we could source. Whole home: $2,000-$7,400, about $4,700 for 2,000 sq ft. Blown-in, installed: $1.65-$3.80 per sq ft, with attic jobs at $1,750-$5,500 and wall dense-pack at $2,000-$4,000. Crawl space: $500-$6,000, averaging about $2,000, or roughly $1-$5 per sq ft installed. Spray foam: whole-project $10,000-$30,000 with a $20,000 national average, and material at $0.44-$0.65 per board foot open cell versus $1.00-$1.50 closed cell. Removal: around $1.50-$3.00 per sq ft for spray foam, $300-$1,000 for a crawl space.

Depth is where quotes quietly differ. Two bids for "attic insulation" can be 6 inches apart in installed depth and still look similar on paper. Make every bid state the target R-value and the settled depth in inches, then compare. A cheaper bid to R-30 is not cheaper than a bid to R-49 - it is a different job.

Be careful with the savings math contractors use to justify a large number. ENERGY STAR's figure for sealing plus insulating is up to 10% of annual energy bills. If a $20,000 foam quote is being sold on a payback claim, ask them to show the arithmetic against your actual utility bills. Most whole-house foam jobs do not pay for themselves quickly on energy savings alone; they get bought for comfort and moisture control, which are legitimate reasons - just not the same reason.

How to choose

Get three bids for anything over about $3,000
Insulation pricing varies more between local contractors than almost any other trade, because material cost is a small share of the job and labor productivity is a big one.
Compare R-value, not price per foot
Normalize every bid to the same target R-value and the same square footage before you compare dollars. Otherwise you are comparing different products.
Make removal a separate, justified line
Removal adds real money. It should be on the quote as its own item with a stated reason, not folded into a single lump sum.
Check for utility rebates before signing
Many gas and electric utilities run insulation and air-sealing rebate programs with their own contractor lists and pre-approval rules. Signing first can disqualify you. Check your utility's website directly.
Ask for the cash price when financing is offered
If a quote is presented as a monthly payment, ask for the total cash price in writing. Dealer-arranged financing costs are often buried in the job price and only show up when you compare the two figures side by side.

FAQ

Insulation cost — common questions

About $4,700 on average, within a national range of roughly $2,000-$7,400, per Fixr's January 2026 data. The spread depends mostly on material choice and how much of the house is being treated.
Material and equipment. Closed-cell foam material alone runs $1.00-$1.50 per board foot versus $0.50-$1.10 per sq ft for blown fiberglass material. Installed, spray foam is roughly $2.75-$7.50 per sq ft depending on new construction versus retrofit. You are buying higher R-value per inch plus an air barrier in one step.
Blown-in attic work at 8-18 inches typically runs $1,750-$5,500, per Fixr. Bob Vila reports a $2,500 national average with a $1,500-$3,500 typical range. Both are consistent with a mid-size attic being a low-four-figure job.
Sometimes, slowly. ENERGY STAR's figure for air sealing plus insulation is up to 10% of your annual energy bill. Run that against your own bills before believing a payback claim. Attic top-ups pay back far faster than whole-house foam.
