Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523There are three separate warranties in play on most plumbing jobs and they cover different things. The manufacturer's parts warranty covers the equipment itself. The contractor's labor warranty covers the installation. A home warranty or service contract is a paid repair plan, not a warranty at all. Terms vary by product and company, so get all three in writing for your specific job.
The gap that catches people is labor. A manufacturer may replace a failed tank at no charge for the part while you pay full price for the removal, disposal, and reinstallation. That's normal, and it's why the contractor's labor warranty term is a real differentiator between two otherwise similar quotes. Ask for it in writing, with the length stated in months or years.
Warranty coverage is commonly conditioned on correct installation and, in some cases, on registration and documented maintenance. That means the install quality you paid for is also what protects the coverage you were promised. Photograph the data plate, register the product if the manufacturer requires it, and keep a maintenance log.
Home warranty plans and service contracts are a different product. They are repair plans with coverage caps, exclusions, service fees per visit, and a contractor network you don't choose. Some homeowners get real value from them; many find the caps and exclusions bite exactly when a large item fails. Read the actual contract, not the brochure — especially the sections on pre-existing conditions, code upgrade exclusions, and dollar caps per item.
We deliberately do not list specific brand warranty terms here. Manufacturers change them, they differ by product line and by whether the unit was professionally installed, and a stale number in an article is worse than no number. Get the current warranty document for the exact model you're buying.
