If you can see raised green growth from the ground, or if your gutters are collecting spongy green material, treat that as the priority. Algae can wait indefinitely; moss on the leading edge of shingles should not.
How to inspect for algae safely, without getting on the roof
You do not need to climb anything to diagnose this. Algae is a surface condition, which means it is fully diagnosable from the ground - and staying on the ground is the right call. A safe five-minute ground inspection:
- Walk the full perimeter of the house at a distance where you can see each slope at an angle. Photograph each side with your phone at maximum zoom.
