What is siding painting?

Siding painting is applying a finish system to existing cladding to restore colour and weather protection. From a siding perspective the key question is whether the cladding is still a good wall covering - if wood or fiber cement is sound, paint can defer replacement; if the siding is failing, leaking or restricted (many vinyl cases), paint wastes money. How siding painting actually works

   Decide paint versus re-side before anyone opens a can

   Sound fiber cement and wood with intact joints often paint well. Soft walls, widespread rot, failed barriers or brittle vinyl that will not hold coating are replacement conversations. Pull a few boards or probe soft spots before committing a whole elevation to film.

   Identify the substrate and coating compatibility

   Wood, engineered wood, fiber cement, aluminum and vinyl each have different prep and product rules. Vinyl colour-change coatings are specialty systems with heat-absorption limits - not every paint belongs on vinyl, and dark colours can warp panels.

   Require honest prep scoped in writing

   Washing, dulling glossy surfaces, scraping failed film, caulking and priming bare areas decide durability. Siding seams, butt joints and end grain are failure lines when ignored. Prep is where cheap bids hide.

   If many boards need replacement, flashing is missing or the barrier is suspect, run replacement numbers before paying for film on a failing wall. Small repairs before paint are normal; structural cladding failure is not a paint day.

What does siding painting cost?

Painting an elevation usually costs less than full re-siding, but only if the cladding is worth coating. Prep intensity and storey height drive paint bids. If large areas need carpentry repair first, run the numbers against replacement before committing.
