Skylight cost

Three things move a skylight quote more than the brand you pick. First, new opening versus existing opening: replacing a unit in a hole that already exists skips framing and drywall entirely. Fixr shows labor around $119–$216 for a new install versus $176–$320 for a replacement unit, but that's the roof-side labor only — the framing and interior finish on a brand-new opening is what actually adds the money.

Second, whether it opens. Ventilating skylights cost roughly twice the material of a fixed unit in Fixr's figures, and motorized or solar-operated versions add controls. Fixr puts electrical work, when it's needed, at about $435–$793.

Third, access and roof type. A single-story asphalt roof with easy ladder access is the cheap case. Steep pitch, tile or metal roofing, a second or third story, or a cathedral ceiling with a long light shaft all cost more, and no online average captures that.

Compare quotes by scope, not by total. A quote that includes the manufacturer flashing kit, disposal, drywall shaft, paint and a labor warranty should be higher than one that doesn't. If one bid is dramatically cheaper, find the missing paragraph before you assume you found a deal.

How to choose

Price the opening separately from the unit

Ask the contractor to line-item the skylight, the roofing labor, the framing, and the interior finish. That's the only way to compare bids that describe the job differently.

Get three bids, not two

Two bids tell you which is cheaper. Three tell you which one is an outlier and why.

Bundle with the roof if the roof is close

If your roof is near replacement, doing both at once avoids paying twice for flashing and roof access, and it lines up the warranties.

Watch for the finance-first sales pitch

If a company leads with a monthly payment instead of a price, ask for the cash price and the total of payments in writing before discussing anything else.

Beware the same-day discount

A price that expires when the salesperson leaves your kitchen is a sales tactic, not a market rate.
