Emergency tree removal is unscheduled, after-hours work on a tree that has already failed or is actively failing. The test is not how bad it looks — it is whether something is under load right now: a trunk resting on a roof, a hung-up limb suspended over a walkway, a root plate lifting out of the ground. If the tree is contacting or near a power line, the first call is your utility, not a tree company. Nobody else is permitted to work an energised conductor.

How emergency tree removal actually works

Get people away from the load path, then call the utility if lines are involved

Move everyone out of the rooms beneath a leaning or resting tree and out of the fall arc outside. If any part of the tree is touching, resting on, or has brought down a wire, treat every wire as live and call the utility emergency line first.

Watch for: Anyone — you, a neighbour, or a tree crew — trying to clear a limb off a wire. Utilities de-energise and clear their own conductors, and a legitimate tree company will refuse the work until they have. A crew that agrees to do it anyway is telling you something about how they operate generally.
Call your insurer before you authorise anything you can wait on

Photograph the tree, the point of contact and any interior damage before anything moves. Most policies expect you to prevent further damage, but they also expect to be told promptly.

Watch for: The gap between emergency stabilisation, which is usually authorised, and full removal and cleanup, which may not be. What is covered varies by policy and by state, and whether the tree was dead beforehand often changes the answer. Ask your own adjuster — do not let a contractor tell you what your policy says.
A crew stabilises before it removes

The first pass is about taking load off: securing or lowering the hung-up limb, supporting or rigging the trunk before cutting, and relieving pressure so nothing shifts unpredictably when the first cut is made.

Watch for: Cutting into a loaded trunk without rigging it first. Wood under tension moves violently when released, and this is where most catastrophic tree-work accidents happen — including damage that was not there before the crew arrived.
Make it safe tonight, finish it properly later

A good emergency response usually splits into two visits: make the property safe and passable now, then come back in daylight to do the removal, the grinding and the cleanup at normal rates.

Watch for: A contract for the entire job signed at 11pm at emergency pricing. Authorise the make-safe work now and price the rest in the morning.
Site make-safe, debris plan and follow-up hazards

After the emergency wood is down, the crew leaves access routes passable, flags remaining hung-up wood or compromised neighbours, and documents what still needs a non-emergency return visit.

Watch for: A "cleared" driveway with a widow-maker still hung in the canopy. Emergency work is not finished until residual hazards are either gone or clearly scheduled.

When emergency tree removal is the wrong call

Everyone else ranking for this is paid when you say yes. Here's when you shouldn't.

Power lines are involved. This is not a tree-service call. Contact your utility’s emergency number, keep everyone well clear including away from fences and puddles near the wire, and wait. A tree crew cannot legally or safely start until the line is de-energised.
The tree is down, nothing is loaded, and nobody is at risk. A trunk lying flat across a back lawn is a scheduled job at scheduled pricing. Paying an emergency premium for wood that is already on the ground and going nowhere is the most common overspend after a storm.
The damage is to the structure, not the tree. Once the tree is off, a torn roof deck, a punctured membrane or a compromised wall is a different trade and a different insurance conversation. Start with roofing storm damage for the building side.
Someone knocked on your door offering to start immediately for cash. Post-storm door-knocking is the highest-risk hiring moment in this industry. Uninsured crews concentrate here, and a deposit paid to a truck with an out-of-state plate is rarely recoverable.
It is one branch you could reach from the ground. Small deadwood within arm’s reach and away from wires is not an emergency. Anything requiring a ladder and a saw at the same time is — for you, not for a crew.

Post-storm, a lot of numbers that answer are call centres selling the lead onward. You want to know who is actually arriving and when.
Can you send your certificate of insurance right now, from your insurer?

Yes, at midnight. This is exactly when uninsured operators appear, and it is the one document worth waiting five minutes for.
What will you do on this visit, and what is deferred?

Emergency response should be scoped as make-safe. Getting that boundary stated on the phone keeps the after-hours premium off the whole job.
What is the after-hours rate, and when does it revert to standard?

Ask for the number before the truck rolls. "We will sort it out later" after a storm is not a pricing model.
Are you licensed to work in this municipality, and what is your business address?

A local address you can verify separates the established local firm from the storm-chasing convoy that will be three states away next week.
Will you document the tree and the damage before you cut?

Once the tree is in pieces, the evidence for your claim is gone. A crew that photographs before cutting has done this properly before.

A tree is leaning on my house. Do I get out?

Leave the rooms under and adjacent to the point of contact, and stay out of the fall arc outside. A tree that is resting rather than fallen is holding energy, and it can move when the wind changes or the soil softens. If the root plate is lifting or you can hear cracking, leave the building entirely and call emergency services.

A limb is caught in the canopy. Can it wait until morning?

Not if anything passes underneath it. A hung-up limb — arborists call it a widowmaker — is held by friction and small branches that give way without warning, often hours or days later in still air. Rope off the area beneath it so nobody walks under it, and get it brought down. It is the failure that most often injures someone after the storm has already passed.

Will my insurance pay for emergency tree removal?

It depends on the policy and often on what the tree hit. Many policies respond when a tree damages an insured structure and are far less willing when a tree simply falls in the yard, and some exclude a tree that was already dead. Emergency stabilisation to prevent further damage is frequently treated differently from cleanup and haul-away. Call your own insurer or agent for a ruling on your policy — this genuinely varies, and a contractor telling you "insurance always covers this" is not a source.

The tree fell into my neighbour’s yard. Who pays?

This is the single most disputed question in tree work and the answer is set by state law and by the facts, not by whose land the trunk grew on. Liability commonly turns on whether the owner knew, or should have known, that the tree was hazardous before it failed — which is why a documented inspection matters so much afterwards. Talk to your insurer and, where the amounts are meaningful, to a local attorney. Do not settle it from a page on the internet, including this one.

How fast can someone actually get here?

On an ordinary night, a few hours is realistic. After a regional storm, honest answers stretch to days, because every crew in the area is already committed and equipment is the constraint. Be sceptical of anyone promising an immediate arrival during a widespread event — either they are not local, or they are not busy, and both are worth asking about.
