It does not heal the defect, it does not last forever, and it commits you to having it inspected. Worth it on the right tree; a false sense of security on the wrong one.
Cabling and bracing are supplemental support systems installed to reduce the chance of a specific structural failure — most often a fork where two stems of similar size meet at a narrow angle and are pulling apart. Cables go high in the canopy and limit how far the two parts can move away from each other. Braces are rods installed through the union itself to resist twisting and separation. They are usually specified together, and neither one repairs the defect underneath.

Assessment first — is this tree a candidate at all
Support hardware works on a sound tree with a defined structural weakness. It does not work on a tree with extensive internal decay, a compromised root plate, or several unrelated defects at once.
Watch for: Cabling proposed without anyone examining the base and the roots. Hardware high in the canopy does nothing about a rotten trunk, and installing it there can make people relax about a tree that should be coming down.
Choosing the system — dynamic or static
Static steel systems hold the union rigidly and are typically chosen where a defect is already advanced. Dynamic synthetic systems allow limited movement so the tree keeps loading and strengthening its own wood, and are often preferred as a preventive measure.
Watch for: One system offered by default because it is the one the crew stocks. The choice should be argued from the tree’s condition, not the truck’s inventory.
Placement — height and geometry are the specification
Cable position is calculated from the union, typically well up the stems being supported, because a cable placed too low provides little leverage and a cable placed too high is ineffective. Bracing rods go through the union in a specified pattern.
Watch for: A cable strung wherever it was convenient to reach. Position is the engineering in this job, and getting it wrong produces hardware that reassures you without doing much.
Installation without creating a new defect
Hardware is anchored into sound wood. Nothing is wrapped around a stem, because a girdling cable or strap will eventually strangle the tissue it is tightened against and kill the limb it was meant to save.
Watch for: Cable, rope or strapping run around the outside of a stem. It is quicker, it is cheaper, and it will fail the tree.
Scheduling the inspection you have now signed up for
Installed hardware becomes a permanent maintenance item. Trees grow around anchors, cables slacken or become embedded, and hardware corrodes. It has to be looked at on a cycle.
Watch for: An installation quoted with no re-inspection interval attached. Un-inspected support hardware is arguably worse than none, because everyone stops worrying about the tree.
A single cable installed in a residential tree commonly runs a few hundred dollars, with multi-cable systems and through-rod bracing on large trees reaching well into four figures. Budget for periodic re-inspection as well — the ongoing obligation is part of the true price, not an optional extra.

Hardware is only appropriate on an otherwise sound tree. If nobody looked at the bottom, the recommendation is not grounded.

You want the reasoning, not the product. A clear answer here tells you the crew is specifying rather than selling.
Where exactly will the cable sit, and how was that height determined?
Placement is the technical content of the job. It should be calculated from the union, not chosen for convenience.
Will anything be wrapped around a stem?
The answer should be an immediate no. Girdling hardware kills the limb it is supporting, slowly enough that nobody connects the two.
What is the re-inspection interval, and will you write it on the invoice?
Getting the interval documented is how you, or the next owner, remember that the tree has hardware in it at all.
Does this change how the tree should be pruned from now on?
It usually does. Weight distribution matters more once a union is being supported, and future crews need to know the hardware is there.
