Compaction, buried flares, girdling roots, chronic drought or waterlogging will overpower any fertiliser response. Those get addressed or ruled out first — often on a root-care visit — so feeding is not used as a substitute for fixing the growing environment.

Test, then match product to the gap

Do all landscape trees need annual fertilization?

No. Many established trees in reasonable soils grow acceptably without yearly feeding. Fertilisation is for documented need, establishment support or recovery plans — not a universal subscription. Healthy shoot growth and good leaf colour often mean you can skip the truck for another year.

What is “deep root fertilization”?

Usually liquid nutrients injected into the soil in a grid under the canopy. It can place material below turf competition, but it does not automatically fix compaction or replace a proper diagnosis. Ask what is in the tank and why injection beats surface application for your case — “deep” is marketing language unless it maps to a real root-depth reason.

Can fertilizer harm a tree?

Yes. Excess salts burn roots, excess nitrogen can force weak growth, and applications on waterlogged or compacted soils waste product while the real stress continues. Wrong pH corrections also cause trouble. Rate and context matter more than brand loyalty.

Should I fertilize a newly planted tree?

Often lightly or not at all in the first season beyond what the planting specification called for — roots need water and oxygen more than a heavy feed.
