Walk-in tub cost

By tub type (materials only, This Old House 2026): basic soaker $2,000–$4,000; hydrotherapy/whirlpool $4,750–$7,500; aerotherapy $5,000–$9,000; combination shower/tub $3,200–$9,500; bariatric $6,000–$10,300; two-seater $10,700–$13,700; luxury $7,000–$20,000.

By material: fiberglass $2,000–$5,000, gelcoat $3,500–$7,000, acrylic $5,000–$10,000, porcelain or cast iron $10,000–$15,000.

Door options add real money. This Old House puts outward-opening doors at $500–$2,000 extra and wheelchair-accessible doors at $1,000–$3,000 extra. A full bathroom remodel around the tub is $10,000–$25,000 — a completely different project.

The costs most often missing from a first quote are the water heater upgrade, a dedicated electrical circuit for jets or a heated seat, wall and tile repair after removal, and permit fees. Ask every bidder to price those explicitly or state in writing that they are not needed.

How to choose

Ask for the all-in number

Tub, labor, plumbing, electrical, tile and wall repair, disposal of the old tub, and permits. A tub-only price is not a project price.

Question the feature list

Jets, chromotherapy lighting and heated seats add thousands and also add things that can break. Decide which you will actually use weekly.

Price the water heater separately

If your current heater is too small, that is a real additional cost. Get it quoted rather than discovering it after the tub is in.

Beware price movement during the visit

If the number drops sharply after you hesitate, the first number was not real. Get written quotes from three companies and compare final totals.

Consider the alternatives at the same price

A curbless roll-in shower with a bench and grab bars can cost less and is easier for many people with mobility limits. Price both before committing.
