Water heater warranties

The most common misunderstanding: a "10-year warranty" almost never means someone shows up free in year eight. It usually means the manufacturer will supply a replacement tank. Getting the old one out, the new one in, and the old one disposed of is labor — and that is the installer's warranty, which is often one or two years, or nothing.

We will not tell you any specific brand's terms. They change by model, by year, and sometimes by retail channel, and a warranty summary in an article is not a document you can enforce. Get the actual warranty PDF for the exact model number on your quote and read the coverage table yourself.

The one cross-brand floor we can point to is ENERGY STAR's: to carry the label, gas storage units must have at least 6 years on the system including parts, gas tankless at least 6 years on the heat exchanger and 5 on parts, and heat pump water heaters at least 6 years on the sealed system. That is a minimum, not a description of what you have.

Registration is the trap. Many manufacturers require you to register within a defined window after installation, and some extend coverage if you do. Do not assume the installer registered it. Do it yourself, keep the confirmation, and keep the invoice — most warranty claims require proof of professional installation and proof of purchase date.

Get the warranty document for the exact model

Not a brand-level marketing page. The model-specific PDF is what a claim is judged against.

Ask separately about labor coverage

"Is labor covered for a warranty tank swap in year 6, and by whom?" The answer is frequently "no." Better to know now.

Register within the window and save the confirmation

Missing a registration deadline is one of the most common reasons a claim gets reduced or refused.

Keep proof of professional installation

Many warranties are void if the unit was not installed by a licensed professional to code. Your invoice and closed permit are that proof.

Understand what maintenance the warranty assumes

Some coverage assumes annual flushing or periodic anode inspection. If the document says so, keep dated service receipts.
