Water treatment costs

In 2026 a salt-based water softener typically costs $1,200–$3,800 installed and a dual-tank unit $1,700–$5,000, per HomeGuide, while Fixr puts the national average softener installation at about $2,500 with a common range of $1,100–$3,000. Whole-house filtration runs about $850–$1,400 for carbon, mineral and sediment media, $1,850–$2,900 with UV added, and $4,800–$8,000 for whole-house reverse osmosis. An under-sink point-of-use system is $170–$580 installed.

Two published cost datasets, two different pictures — and that gap is the point. HomeGuide reports salt-based softeners at $1,200–$3,800 installed; Fixr's national average for softener installation is about $2,500 with a $1,100–$3,000 typical band and outliers from $600 to $7,000. Neither is wrong. Water treatment pricing depends on your plumbing layout, whether a drain and a dedicated circuit already exist, and — more than anything — the sales channel you bought through.

Equipment cost scales with capacity, and capacity should be sized from your hardness number and household water use, not guessed. Fixr's materials-only figures by grain capacity run roughly $400–$1,000 for a 32,000-grain unit, $600–$1,500 at 48,000 grains, and $1,700–$2,500 at 96,000 grains. Oversizing is a real upsell pattern — a bigger tank does not make water "more" soft, it changes how often the unit regenerates.

Budget for the things that are not on the sticker. A dedicated electrical circuit, if you need one, adds $250–$900. Salt or potassium runs $50–$150 per year. Ongoing maintenance service runs $100–$300+ per year. Reverse osmosis filters are $30–$150 each every 6–12 months and the membrane $40–$250 every 2–3 years. Whole-house filter cartridges are $15–$65 for carbon, sediment or iron media and $150–$250 for whole-house RO elements. UV lamps are $20–$100.

The biggest overpayment risk here is not the equipment, it is the channel. Systems sold through in-home appointments after a free water test are frequently priced several times what an equivalent NSF-certified unit costs installed by a local plumber. Before you compare monthly payments, get the total cash price in writing. If the salesperson will only quote a payment, that is a red flag, not a convenience.

How to choose

Get one quote from a plumber, not just water-treatment companies
A licensed plumber installing an off-the-shelf certified softener is a legitimate comparison point and often the cheapest honest bid you'll see.
Price the ten-year cost, not the install
Salt at $50–$150 a year plus $100–$300 a year of service is real money. A cheap install with expensive proprietary cartridges can lose to a pricier install using standard ones.
Refuse proprietary-only consumables where you can
Ask whether replacement filters are a standard size available from multiple suppliers. Locked-in cartridges are where the long-term margin lives.
Ask for the cash price before the monthly payment
Dealer-arranged financing markup is invisible unless you see both numbers. Get the cash total in writing on the same quote.
Consider renting only as a short-term bridge
Fixr lists softener rental at $25–$50 per month. Over a decade that exceeds most purchase prices. It makes sense if you're moving soon, not as a default.

FAQ

Water Treatment cost — common questions

HomeGuide reports $1,200–$3,800 for a salt-based system installed, $1,700–$5,000 for dual-tank, and $1,500–$4,500 for salt-free conditioners. Fixr's national average installation is about $2,500.
About $850–$1,400 for carbon, mineral and sediment filters; $1,850–$2,900 adding UV; $2,650–$5,400 adding a softener; and $4,800–$8,000 for whole-house reverse osmosis, per HomeGuide.
HomeGuide puts basic hardness and water analysis at $130–$200. Your local health department may test private well water at no cost, and the EPA directs well owners to state-certified labs.
Because the quote includes the cost of the sales visit, the commission and the financing. That is not automatically fraud, but it is why you should always price the same NSF-certified specification through a local plumber before signing.
HomeGuide reports quality softeners lasting 15–20 years with proper maintenance, though that depends heavily on incoming water quality, usage and whether maintenance is actually done.
