Swapping a tub sounds like swapping an appliance. It is not: the tub went in before the walls were finished, it is usually wider than the doorway, and the drain end has a handedness. Those three facts decide whether this is two days or two weeks.
What is bathtub replacement?
Bathtub replacement removes an existing tub and fits a new one in the same alcove. The complication is that a tub is built into the room rather than placed in it: its flange sits behind the wall covering, so replacing it means taking off the lower surround and usually the wall behind it. Measure the alcove, not the tub - and find the drain end
Tub lengths, widths and depths are less standardised than people expect. The other measurement that matters is which end the waste sits at, looking into the alcove. Order the wrong hand and the plumbing gets rerouted or the tub goes back.

Work out how the old tub leaves the room

Set the tub level and properly supported
A tub sits level and supported across its base as the manufacturer requires - many acrylic and steel tubs need a mortar bed or a supplied cradle. Unsupported, they flex underfoot, and flexing eventually cracks the shell and breaks the seal at the surround.

Rebuild the surround and seal the joint

When bathtub replacement is the wrong call
When saying yes is the wrong move:
- The finish is worn but the tub is structurally sound. Professional refinishing costs a fraction of a replacement and never opens the wall. It is not permanent and does not suit every tub, but where the shell is solid and the complaint is cosmetic it is the proportionate answer.
- Nobody in the household actually takes baths. If the tub is functioning as an awkward shower tray, another tub buys the same compromise in a newer colour. Price a shower in the same alcove before deciding.
- There is an unexplained stain on the ceiling below. Establish whether the leak is the tub, the waste and overflow, or the surround joint. Two of the three are cheap repairs, and a new tub fixes neither of them.
- The whole bathroom is being remodelled within a year or two. The alcove gets opened again, the surround replaced again, and the making-good paid for twice.
- You are being sold a liner in a bathroom with suspected water damage. Liners are a legitimate fast product on a sound tub in a sound alcove. Over a cracked tub or a wet wall they seal the problem in and make diagnosis harder later.
- The chosen tub does not match the alcove and the plan is to make it fit. Filling a gap at one end, or building out a wall, is how a straightforward swap becomes carpentry. Change the tub, not the room.

What to check when hiring for bathtub replacement
- Which end is the drain, and have you confirmed it against the tub you are ordering? The most common ordering error on this job. Wrong hand means rerouting the waste or sending the tub back, and both cost days.
- How is the old tub coming out, and is disposal included? Cast iron is heavy enough that removal is genuine labour, usually by breaking it up in place. Frequently left out of a quote given from a photograph.
- How much of the surround is coming off, and is replacing it in this price? The flange sits behind the wall covering, so some must come off. Patched or replaced is the difference between two quite different quotes.
- Does this tub need a mortar bed or a manufacturer cradle, and are you providing it? Many acrylic and steel tubs need support across the base. Skipping it is invisible on handover and produces a flexing, then cracking, tub within a year or two.
- Will you fill and drain the tub before the wall is closed? The waste and overflow is the most likely leak, and this is the only moment it is easy to see and easy to fix.
- What happens if there is damage behind the old tub? Likely wherever a tub leaked at the overflow. Agree the pricing before the wall is open, not while you are standing in a bathroom with no tub.
- Are you sealing the tub-to-wall joint with flexible sealant, filled or empty? Flexible sealant, never grout - and many manufacturers specify sealing with the tub filled, because it deflects under load. A fitter who knows this knows the rest.
