How freestanding tub installation actually works

   Confirm floor structure for water plus people

   A freestanding tub full of water is a concentrated load. Joist direction, span, and subfloor stiffness matter - especially for cast materials and large soakers. If the floor was never meant for a point load here, reinforce before finishes go down, not after the first flex is felt. Lightweight acrylic and heavy cast iron are not interchangeable assumptions on the same joist bay.

   Place the drain where the tub template and the joists agree

   Most freestanding tubs drain near centre or slightly offset; the rough-in must match the exact model. Moving a drain on a slab or finished ceiling below is a plumbing remodel item. Dry-fit the template before tile when possible.

   Design the filler: floor, wall or nearby deck

   Floor-mounted fillers need a solid, waterproofed penetration and supply lines you can isolate. Wall-mounted fillers need correct height and projection so water hits the tub, not the floor. Pressure and spout alignment matter more than finish colour.

   Plan service access to the waste

   Prep the finished floor plane and set level

   Connect, seal thoughtfully, and water-test hard

   Make drain and supply connections, fill the tub fully, check for movement, inspect the ceiling below if any, and test the filler at full open. Walk the splash zone. Confirm the overflow works. Photograph connections before decorative skirts hide anything they should not.
