Kitchen cabinets, installed as a working kitchen

Boxes on walls are not enough. Appliances, sink plumbing, hood ducting and countertop timing have to agree or the prettiest run still fails on day one. We match you with installers who sequence the whole room.

In short

What is kitchen cabinet installation?

Kitchen cabinet installation is the placement of a full cooking-room cabinet package so that appliances, sink, ventilation and countertops all land on the openings and heights the layout promised. The hang itself often takes two to four days once boxes are on site; the project takes longer because fabricators, plumbers and appliance setters have to hit the same sequence. A kitchen fails less often from a crooked door than from a dishwasher opening that was never checked against the actual machine.

The job

How kitchen cabinet installation actually works

  1. Lock appliances and sink before the cabinet order

Model numbers drive opening widths, panel thicknesses, water line positions and hood CFM. Kitchen cabinetry is built around equipment; equipment is not adapted to leftover holes.

Watch for: “We will pick the fridge later.” Counter-depth versus standard depth alone can ruin a flanking cabinet plan.

  2. Plan work zones, not just elevations

Prep, cook, clean and store zones need landing space and door swings that do not collide. Installers hang what is ordered; zone mistakes are design mistakes found when someone first unloads groceries.

Watch for: Pretty elevations that never checked a 36-inch fridge door against an island stool overhang.

  3. Utility rough-in confirmation

Water, drain, gas, electrical and hood duct locations are verified against the cabinet plan while walls are open or before bases land. Moves after boxes are in are the expensive kind.

Watch for: A sink base ordered for a centre drain when the stack is offset six inches. The cabinet is not wrong — the coordination was.

  4. Demolition and substrate ready for a kitchen

Old boxes out, floors protected or finished to the agreed plane, blocking added for rails and hoods, and any island floor box completed. Kitchens have more services in the floor and wall than bath vanities ever do.

Watch for: Flooring decisions still open. Whether flooring runs under bases changes height, dishwasher fit and future replacement.

  5. Hang wall and base runs to kitchen datums

Level line from the high point of the floor, wall cabinets at the agreed height above finished counter, bases unified for a continuous countertop plane, tall ovens and pantries set plumb so appliance panels read as architecture.

Watch for: Wall cabinets hung before the range hood’s duct centreline is proven. A hood that misses the duct is a carpentry problem and a ventilation problem.

  6. Countertop template only on finished bases

Fabricators template when bases are in final position, level, and joined. Seam placement, sink cut-outs and overhangs depend on that frozen geometry.

Watch for: Templating while bases are still being shimmed. You inherit every error in stone.

  7. Set appliances, connect trades, final adjustments

Dishwasher panels, fridge panels, range and hood go in with the trades that own gas and electrical. Doors and drawers get final reveals after tops and appliances add weight and after the room’s humidity shifts.

Watch for: Cabinet installer finished before appliance delivery with no return visit booked. Panel gaps and hinge strain show up after the heavy pieces land.

What does kitchen cabinet installation cost?

Kitchen cabinet installation pricing tracks box tier, kitchen size and how many other trades must coordinate on site. Labour for hang-only differs sharply from a package that includes layout and trade scheduling. See the cabinets cost guide for full-kitchen ranges.

Kitchen Cabinet Installation — questions people ask

The hang is often a few days for a typical residential kitchen once boxes are present and the room is ready. The full kitchen — tops, plumbing reconnect, appliances and punch list — commonly stretches longer because other trades and fabricators sit on their own schedules.
Decide deliberately. Flooring under cabinets simplifies future floor replacement but changes heights and dishwasher clearance; flooring to the toe kick can look cleaner and use less material. What matters is that every trade works to the same decision — mixed assumptions cause scribed disasters.
Experienced DIYers hang simple stock kitchens. Multi-appliance kitchens with stone tops, gas ranges and ducted hoods punish inexperience because errors cascade into other trades. If the kitchen is the only cooking space in the home, professional coordination is usually cheaper than living with a mistake.
Old cabinets out or scheduled for their tear-out, appliances selected, utilities located, flooring plan decided, and a clear path to stage boxes. Surprises on the morning of hang burn the day everyone already booked.
Because “kitchen cabinets” might mean hang labour on your boxes, a design-and-supply package, or a remodel that quietly includes plumbing and electrical. Compare line items, not headline totals.
Visually it helps if trim profiles and finish sheen relate to nearby millwork, but kitchens are allowed their own material logic. Matching an old stain exactly is harder than choosing a coherent new finish plan.
A common sequence is rough plumbing and electrical, then cabinets, then countertop template, then tops install, then finish plumbing and appliances, then final punch. Variations exist, but cabinets before tops is nearly universal for stone. Changing the order without a plan is how seams and sink cut-outs go wrong.
Yes — cabinets follow a level line from the high point of the floor, with shims under bases as needed. Following the floor slope produces a countertop that falls visibly and a dishwasher opening that fights the machine. Floor slope is normal; cabinet tops should not inherit it.
More important than marketing suggests. Adjustable European hinges with soft-close make long-term living easier. Cheap hinges that will not hold a reveal become a maintenance tax. Ask what is included and whether soft-close is standard or an upcharge.
