Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523Quiet doors and drawers are a hardware problem, not a new-kitchen problem — until the hinge cup, slide type or drawer box cannot accept modern soft-close. We explain the conversion limits and match you with fitters who check before they drill.
A soft-close hardware upgrade adds damping to cabinet doors and drawers so they decelerate instead of slamming. On modern European hinges it can be a clip-on damper or a hinge swap in one visit; on older face-frame kitchens with side-mount epoxy slides it can mean new slides, new drawer boxes, or an honest “not worth it.” The upgrade is small money when compatible and false economy when the box geometry fights the hardware.

Identify hinge and slide systems before buying parts
European cup hinges, traditional butt hinges, side-mount ball-bearing slides, epoxy roller slides and undermounts each have different soft-close paths. Identification takes minutes and prevents a bag of parts that will not fit.
Watch for: Ordering “universal soft-close” kits from a photo. Cup diameter, overlay type and slide length are not universal.
Choose damper add-on versus full soft-close hinge
Many European hinges accept a clip-on damper; others need a full soft-close hinge body. Full swaps cost more but reset worn hinge geometry. Mix-and-match on one run looks fine if overlays match.
Watch for: Adding dampers to hinges that are already loose in blown screw holes. Soft-close will not fix a door that cannot hold a setting.
Assess drawers for slide conversion
Side-mount soft-close slides need clearance and a sound drawer box. Undermount soft-close often needs specific notches, bottom thickness and interior width. Some older drawers are cheaper to rebuild than to convert.
Watch for: Quotes that promise undermount soft-close on every drawer without measuring a single box. That is a sales sentence, not an assessment.
Batch the kitchen and adjust reveals
Doors come off, plates are checked, new hinges or dampers go on, and every door is adjusted for even gaps. Doing half a kitchen leaves a mixed feel that bothers people more than all-old hardware did.
Watch for: No final adjustment pass. Soft-close doors that bind or pop open are usually adjustment issues, not defective dampers.
Test under real speed and load
Close doors from a realistic push, open drawers with typical contents, and confirm dampers complete the close without slamming or stalling short. Replace weak dampers on heavy pantry doors with heavier-duty hardware.
Watch for: One damper on an oversized tall door. Door weight ratings exist for a reason.
Soft-close upgrades are usually priced per door and per drawer, with a minimum call-out. Clip-on dampers sit at the low end; full hinge sets and drawer slide conversions cost more, and drawer box rebuilds step up again. See the cabinets cost guide.

Everyone else ranking for this is paid when you say yes. Here's when you shouldn't.
Do not enlarge hinge cups freehand to force a different cup diameter. A ruined door face is worth more than the damper you were installing.
Have you identified my hinge cup size, overlay and slide type on site?
Parts should follow identification, not the other way around.
Which doors get dampers versus full hinge replacements, and why?
A mixed strategy can be smart; a vague one is padding.
For drawers, is conversion possible without new boxes?
This is where soft-close quotes quietly triple. Get a yes/no per drawer bank.
Is reveal adjustment included after install?
Soft-close without alignment looks and feels unfinished.
What warranty covers dampers that die in a year?
Hardware fails; know who returns to replace it.
