How deck lighting installation actually works

  1. Decide the layout while the deck is still a drawing

    Which steps, which posts, which edges. The useful principle is to light the surfaces people walk on and the changes in level, not to light the deck as an object. Uplighting the whole thing looks good in a photograph and produces glare when you are sitting on it.

    Watch for: Being sold a fixture count rather than a lighting plan. More fittings is not the same as being able to see the steps.

  2. Run the cable while the frame is open

    Cable routed through the joists and posts before decking goes on is invisible, protected and quick. After the boards are down, the same runs mean lifting the surface or surface-mounting the cable where it can be seen and damaged.

    Watch for: A builder who says lighting can be added later. It can, but not at this price, and it is worth at least running spare cable now even if the fittings come later.

  3. Low-voltage or line-voltage

    Low-voltage systems run from a transformer and are the norm for step, post and rail lighting. Line-voltage is for larger fixtures, outlets and anything on a switch loop from the house — and it is licensed electrical work in most jurisdictions, with requirements for wet locations and for ground-fault protection.

    Watch for: Line-voltage work being done by whoever happens to be on site. Outdoor circuits have specific requirements and this is not the place to find out yours were not met.

  4. Fittings and transformer sized together

    The transformer has to cover the total load with headroom, and cable runs that are long or thin lose voltage, which shows up as fittings at the far end being dimmer than the ones near the transformer. Every part touching the outside — fittings, connectors, the transformer housing — needs to be rated for wet locations.

    Watch for: Indoor-rated connectors used outdoors because they were to hand. They corrode, they fail intermittently, and the fault is buried inside a deck.

  5. Control and commissioning

    A timer, photocell or smart control decides when it comes on. Once it is live, look at it after dark from where you will actually sit and from your neighbour's side of the fence — the difference between good deck lighting and bad deck lighting is almost entirely about glare.

    Watch for: Fittings aimed into eye line. Once they are set into a post or a riser, redirecting them is not a small change.

If the budget will not stretch to fittings now, it is still worth paying to run spare cable while the deck is open — it is a small line at that moment and a large one afterwards.
Most of it is low voltage. Step lights, post cap lights, rail lights and recessed floor lights typically run from a transformer that itself plugs into a mains outlet, which keeps the wiring in and around the deck at a voltage that is far more forgiving. Anything larger — a wall light, an outlet on the deck, a switched circuit from the house — is line voltage, and in most jurisdictions that is licensed electrical work with specific wet-location and ground-fault requirements.
For a plug-in low-voltage system, usually not. For any new line-voltage circuit, outlet or switch, generally yes — and it varies by jurisdiction. The practical test is whether new mains wiring is being installed. If a contractor is proposing to add an exterior outlet to power your transformer, that is the part with the permit and inspection attached, and it should be quoted as electrical work rather than folded into a lighting price.
Almost always voltage drop. Low-voltage cable loses voltage over distance, and the loss is worse on long runs and thinner cable, so fittings furthest from the transformer receive less than the ones nearest it. It is a design problem rather than a fault: it is solved by heavier cable, by splitting the scheme into multiple runs from the transformer, or by feeding a long run from both ends. Retrofitting the fix means getting back to the cable, which is why the layout is worth getting right first time.
It depends on where you are. Some jurisdictions require illumination at exterior stairs serving a dwelling, and the requirement can differ between a deck stair and a main entrance. It is worth asking your building department rather than assuming either way. Regardless of what is required, stair lighting is the part of a deck lighting scheme that does actual work — it is where people misjudge a step, and it is the one place the fittings earn their cost.
