Structural gate before colour

Walk the deck for bounce, soft posts, loose guards and any gap or stain line at the house ledger. If those fail, you need repair, resurfacing or replacement decisions first. Coatings do not restore capacity.

Watch for: A stain quote written from the driveway with nobody under the deck. That is a painting estimate on unknown structure.
Board-level triage

Cupped, rotted or chronically wet boards should be replaced, not stained over. Fasteners that have backed out need reset or upgrade so the coating is not applied to a moving, failing field. Match species and thickness when patching or the finish will highlight every repair.

Watch for: Solid-colour stain sold to “hide” soft spots. Hiding is not fixing.
Prep that makes coatings possible

Should I hire a painter or a deck builder to stain?

Coatings-focused painters own product selection and application. Deck builders often handle prep when they are already replacing boards or rebuilding rails — and should sub or refuse coatings work outside their skill. Can stain fix grey weathered wood?

Cleaning and the right product can restore colour on sound wood. Grey and fuzzy often means surface fibers are damaged; sometimes sanding or board replacement is required. Soft wood underneath is not a stain problem.
