Decide which industry problem you actually have

If the surface meets the waterline, includes coping, or is a bonded wet walking plane around the shell, you want a pool/hardscape specialist. If you need an elevated lounge platform, a step-up entertaining deck beside the pool fence, or a wood structure that never forms the wet edge, you are in framed-deck territory.

Watch for: Hiring a deck-only crew to rebuild a bonded concrete surround, or a pool crew to hang a second-story ledger. Wrong trade, wrong details.

Keep wood out of the wet-edge role unless you accept the maintenance

Constant splash, pool chemistry and standing water punish organic surfaces. Even “pool-friendly” boards need drainage, gap discipline and a maintenance plan. Many better designs put masonry or rated wet-area surfaces at the water and wood only on a drier elevated plane.

Watch for: A full wood surround sold as zero-maintenance because it is composite. Splash zones still need washdown and inspection.

Structure, splash and separation

Footings, ledger rules and guards follow deck practice, but posts and framing should stay clear of chronic wetting where possible. Plan how pool deck wash water and overflow move away from wood posts and house ledgers.

Watch for: Posts in a permanent puddle at the water’s edge. That is a detailing failure waiting for rot or corrosion.

Barriers, gates and the pool code interface

Watch for: A deck that bypasses a required barrier or creates hand/footholds into the pool yard. Inspectors notice.
