Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523Natural wood is a structural and finishing craft, not just a cheaper surface. We match you with builders who select grade, fasten for movement and time the first coat correctly — not crews who treat every board like dry composite.
Wood deck installation builds the same permitted structure as any deck — footings, frame, ledger, guards, stairs — then surfaces it with natural boards whose behaviour is still changing after install. Moisture content, grade selection, fastening pattern and the first finish window decide whether that surface stays flat and serviceable or cups, splits and rejects stain within a season. Those decisions are install craft; species marketing does not replace them.

Species and grade chosen for the install, not just the catalogue photo
“Wood” includes pressure-treated pine, cedar, redwood, tropical hardwoods and others, each with different density, extractives and movement. Within a species, grade (clear, knotty, construction) changes how boards mill, fasten and finish. Structural members and decking boards may legitimately be different products on the same job.
Watch for: A quote that only says “wood decking” with no species, grade or whether the frame lumber is the same stock as the surface. You cannot compare bids on that language.
Delivery, stickering and moisture reality
Green or high-moisture boards shrink after they are fastened. Kiln-dried stock moves less but still responds to weather. Boards should be stickered flat, off soil, and sorted for crown and defects before they hit the joists. Installing wet boards tight is a common path to later gaps and popped fasteners.
Watch for: Decking left in a closed plastic wrap in the sun, or installed the afternoon it arrives without sorting. Both create surprises you will walk on for years.
Structure first — wood surface does not change the ledger rules
Permits, footings, ledger flashing, hangers and inspection sequence are the same job described on the main installation page. Wood decking is not a reason to skip flashing or to face-nail guards into boards alone. The surface is the last layer on a code-governed frame.
Watch for: A carpenter who only talks about board width and stain colour. Ask about the ledger and the inspection sequence before you talk grain pattern.
Fastening pattern for a material that will move
Face screws, ring-shank nails or hidden systems each have trade-offs on wood. Fasteners must be corrosion-appropriate for the species and any preservative treatment. Boards are typically fastened with a slight crown up and gaps that anticipate shrinkage rather than the tight dry-fit used on some composites.
Watch for: Electro-galvanised fasteners into modern copper-based treated framing, or hidden clips designed for composite grooves forced onto square-edge wood. Wrong hardware fails early.
End grain, cuts and site sealing
Every cut end is a sponge. End-grain sealer on cut ends, especially on vertical posts and stair stringer cuts, is small work that prevents a large share of early checking at board ends. Field cuts should be clean; crushed fibers hold water.
Watch for: Raw cut ends butted to the house or buried in a picture frame with no sealer. Those ends open first.
The first finish window — not optional, not immediate for every stock
Some pressure-treated stock needs time to dry before it will accept stain; some cedar and redwood can take a first coat sooner depending on moisture and product. Film-forming paints on horizontal decks are a frequent failure mode. Penetrating finishes and the prep they need are a coatings decision — painters own long-form staining content — but the builder must leave the surface cleanable and correctly fastened for that work.
Watch for: Stain sprayed on wet treated lumber the day after install “to protect it,” or a builder who says wood never needs finish in your climate. Both are usually expensive optimism.
First-season behaviour and punch list
Checking (surface cracks), raised grain and minor cupping after the first hot–wet cycles are common in many species and grades. A good builder explains what will be adjusted (backed-out fasteners, a board that truly failed) versus what is normal wood behaviour. Structural bounce or ledger gaps are never “seasoning.”
Watch for: A warranty that ends the day of final inspection with no language about fastener follow-up after the first season.
Wood-surfaced decks often land lower on material line items than composite for the same size, but labour for careful fastening, finishing prep and future maintenance cycles is real money. Height, stairs and railing still move the total more than board species alone.

Deck sizing and planning tools → Square footage and railing runs before wood quotes.
Everyone else ranking for this is paid when you say yes. Here's when you shouldn't.
How different woods behave as products — without restating install craft here.
The ownership trade-off, side by side.
Species-specific residual service pages when the material is already chosen.
Painting owns long-form stain chemistry; decks links there for finish work.
Building an elevated wood deck is still structural work. Ledger failures and guard failures do not care that the boards are “natural.” DIY board replacement on a sound low platform is different from DIY framing.
What species and grade for framing versus decking, written on the quote?
Mixed vague “wood” quotes cannot be compared and hide substitutions.
What is the moisture plan — green, kiln-dried, acclimation time?
Install timing and gapping depend on the answer.
What fasteners, and are they rated for the preservative in the framing?
Wrong metal and treated lumber is a classic early failure.
How are cut ends sealed and when is the first finish scheduled?
Install and coatings are one ownership story even if two trades show up.
What does the workmanship warranty cover after the first summer?
Wood moves; you want a defined fastener and board replacement stance.
Who pulls the permit and meets inspections?
Surface material never removes that obligation.
