Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523If a door won't secure the house, the priority order is: make the opening safe tonight, document everything with photos before anything is touched, then repair. Temporary security — a board-up, a temporary lock, or a screwed-shut panel — is a legitimate step, not a failure.
Document first, if it's safe to. Photograph the damage from multiple angles, including the jamb and strike plate area, before any repair. If it was a break-in, file the police report and get the report number. Insurance and any later claim depend on this record, and it takes two minutes.
Then secure it. Common temporary measures: screwing plywood over the opening, replacing a splintered strike-plate area with a reinforcement plate and long screws, or having a locksmith fit a temporary lock. If the door itself is intact and the jamb split — which is the usual outcome of a forced entry — the repair is often to the jamb, not the door.
Storm damage. If wind or water has damaged the door, check the surrounding wall and framing too, not just the door. Water that got past a failed door will show up as staining or soft drywall inside. Photograph that as well; it belongs in the same claim.
Lockouts. A locksmith is almost always cheaper than a broken door. Verify the locksmith's business address and license status where your state licenses them — lockout scams that quote low by phone and demand far more on site are a known pattern.
Be careful with emergency-premium pricing. It's real and often justified, but get the after-hours rate stated before the truck rolls, and get a written invoice describing what was done.
