Gate installation means setting a pair of posts strong enough to carry a swinging load, building or hanging a braced gate leaf between them, and fitting hinges and a latch that stay aligned as the ground moves. Almost every sagging gate is a post or a brace problem, not a hinge problem. Width, swing direction and what the gate has to clear are decided before the posts go in, not after.

How fence gate installation actually works

Decide the opening before anything is ordered

Width is driven by what has to pass through it — a person, a mower, a trailer, a skid steer, a rubbish bin. Measure the widest thing, not the average thing, and add clearance for hands and turns.

Watch for: A standard pedestrian gate specified by habit. Widening a gate afterwards means moving a post, which means the concrete, which means most of the job again. This is the cheapest decision to get right and one of the more expensive to revisit.
Set the swing and the approach

Which way it opens is decided by the slope, by what it would hit, by whether you want it to close behind you, and sometimes by code where the gate serves a pool or an exit route. A gate on rising ground cannot swing uphill without a large ground clearance.

Watch for: A gate that swings into a slope. It will either be built with a gap under it big enough to defeat the point of the fence, or it will jam in its first wet season.
Build the gate posts as structure

The hinge post carries the whole gate as a cantilever and is being levered out of the ground every time the gate opens. It should be heavier stock, set deeper, or braced — and on wide or heavy gates, all three.

Watch for: Gate posts identical to line posts. This is the single most common reason a gate sags within a year, and it is invisible at handover. Ask specifically how the gate posts differ.
Brace the leaf

A gate leaf is a rectangle, and a rectangle without a diagonal will rack into a parallelogram under its own weight. Wood gates take a diagonal brace or a tensioned cable; metal gates are usually welded and braced in the frame.

Watch for: A wood brace running the wrong way. A timber diagonal must run from the bottom of the hinge side up to the top of the latch side so it works in compression. Fitted the other way it is in tension, the joint pulls apart, and the gate sags anyway.
Hang and fit hardware

Hinges are set, the leaf is hung and shimmed to level, then the latch and keeper are positioned last. Outdoor hardware wants to be rated for exterior use — plated steel in a wet climate rusts to a seized hinge in a few seasons.

Watch for: Interior-grade or unrated hardware on a coastal or high-rainfall site. Also check the hinges are adjustable: a gate that can be re-trued with a spanner in year three is worth far more than one that cannot.
Test the full arc, loaded

The gate should open and close through its whole travel without touching the ground, latch without lifting, and stay where you leave it. Self-closing hinges, where fitted, should close it from any position in the arc.

Watch for: A gate tested once, from the closed position, on a dry day. Ask for it to be swung fully open and released, and check the clearance at the low point of the ground, not the high one.

When fence gate installation is the wrong call

Everyone else ranking for this is paid when you say yes. Here's when you shouldn't.

You want a wide gate on soft or unstable ground. The wider the leaf, the more leverage on the hinge post, and soft ground gives that leverage somewhere to go. On a long span the honest answer is often a pair of gates or a rolling gate rather than one heroic leaf.
The gate is meant to secure a pool and you are treating it as a convenience gate. Pool gates have a defined safety role, with requirements covering how they close, how they latch and which way they swing. A normal garden gate does not meet them by accident.
You are adding a gate to a fence whose posts are already failing. A new gate hung off a run that is on its way out is a good gate on a bad fence, and it will move with the fence. Sort the posts first.
You want automation and there is no power at the gate. Getting a circuit to a gate post is licensed electrical work, often trenched, and it is frequently the larger half of an automation budget. Price that before falling in love with the operator.
The opening is on a shared driveway or an easement. A gate across an access route others have a right to use is a legal question before it is a construction one. Check the easement wording first.
You need to keep a determined dog in. Gates are the weak point — the gap under them, the latch a paw can lift, the leaf a dog can climb. If containment is the actual goal, that constrains gate design more than aesthetics do, and it is worth saying so at the quote stage.

The question that predicts whether the gate sags. If the answer is "they are the same", you have found the future problem before it happens.

What clearance is there under the gate at the lowest point of the ground?

Gates are usually hung where the ground is highest and then scrape somewhere else. Ask about the low point specifically.
Are the hinges adjustable, and what are they rated for outdoors?

Adjustable hinges let the gate be re-trued cheaply for years. Unrated hardware seizes, and then the hinge is the job.
Which way does it swing, and why that way?

You want a reason — slope, obstruction, code — not a default. Reversing a swing after the posts are set is not a small change.
If I want it automated later, what should you leave in place now?

A conduit run and a slightly heavier post cost very little at build time and save a trench later. Ask even if automation is a maybe.
What is warranted on the gate specifically, and for how long?

Why does my gate sag when the rest of the fence is fine?

Because the gate is the only part of the fence carrying a moving load. The hinge post supports the whole leaf as a cantilever and gets levered every time the gate swings, so it works loose in the ground long before a line post would. The second cause is the leaf itself racking out of square, which happens when there is no diagonal brace or the brace has been fitted in the wrong orientation. Both are structural, and both are why re-hanging the gate rarely fixes it for long.

How wide should a gate be?

Measure the widest thing that will ever go through and add clearance, then check that against what one leaf can carry. A gate wide enough for a trailer or a small machine is usually built as a double drive gate rather than a single leaf, because a single leaf that wide puts a lot of leverage on one post. It is worth thinking past today: people regularly narrow their options by fitting a pedestrian gate on the only side of the house a mower could reach.

Which way should a gate swing?

Ordinarily inward, away from the approach, so nobody walking up gets a gate opened into them and so the gate is not standing over a path when it is open. That default gets overridden by slope — a gate cannot swing uphill without a large gap beneath it — by anything it would collide with, and by code where the gate serves a pool or an exit. Settle it on site with the crew rather than on a drawing.

Should I add an automatic opener?

It depends on your approach and your traffic more than on the gate. Automation is worth most on a driveway you use daily, on a slope where a heavy gate is unpleasant to move, or where you want to control access. It needs power at the gate, which is licensed electrical work and often trenching, and that is regularly the larger half of the cost. If it is a maybe, ask the fence crew to run an empty conduit and set a slightly heavier post now.

Can I put a gate in an existing fence?

Usually yes, but it is not a panel swap. You are cutting an opening and adding two posts that have to be set properly, so the work is closer to a small install than to a repair — and the existing fence has to be sound enough either side to take it. If the run is already old, this is the moment to ask whether the posts nearby will outlast the new gate, because otherwise you will be back for the same section twice.

What hardware should an outdoor gate have?

Hinges and latches rated for exterior use, and ideally hinges that can be adjusted with a hand tool. Coastal and high-rainfall sites are harder on hardware than anywhere else, and a seized hinge means removing the gate to fix it. Where the gate has a safety function — around a pool, or containing a small child or a dog — the self-closing and self-latching requirements are specific and are covered in the safety guides rather than left to hardware preference.
