Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523The warranty question in home security is inseparable from the ownership question. If equipment is leased, repairs are usually the provider's responsibility while the agreement runs and the gear goes back when it ends. If you own it, you rely on the manufacturer's warranty and any service plan you bought. Get both answers in writing before signing.
Ask three questions and require written answers. Do I own this equipment outright at the end of the term? Who repairs or replaces a failed device, and at whose cost? Is there a separate service plan, what does it cost, and what does it exclude? These are simple questions and a reluctance to answer them plainly is itself the answer.
Warranty terms differ by manufacturer and by provider and they change over time, so we will not quote any specific company's terms here — check the current documentation for the exact product you are being offered, in writing, before you sign. What we can say generally: a manufacturer warranty covers defects, not accidental damage, not lightning, and usually not labor to come out and swap the device. A provider's service plan is a separate product that typically covers the visit.
Leased equipment carries a specific risk worth naming: at the end of the agreement you may have to return it or buy it out, and it may be locked to that provider's monitoring so it is worthless with anyone else. Ask directly whether the panel and sensors will function with another monitoring company. If the answer is no, price that into the deal.
Finally, keep your own records. Model numbers, serial numbers, purchase date, and copies of every agreement, stored somewhere that is not the provider's app. If you ever need to make a warranty claim, dispute a charge, or prove what was installed, that folder is what you will need.
