What it probably is

  1. Stack effect between floors

    The most common cause in two-storey homes

    Upstairs hot in summer and downstairs cold in winter, consistently. Warm air rises; a system balanced for the whole house fights this all day.

  2. Duct runs that are long, leaking or undersized

    Very common, and often fixable

    The affected rooms are furthest from the air handler, or the duct crosses an unconditioned attic or crawl space where it loses its conditioning en route.

  3. Closed, blocked or unbalanced registers

    Common and free to check

    Specific rooms only, with no pattern by floor. Dampers left set from a previous season are routine.

  4. Insulation and air sealing gaps

    Common - and an insulation job, not an HVAC one

    The worst room is over a garage, under a roof, above a crawl space, or has a lot of exterior wall. Sun on one elevation makes it worse in the afternoon.

  5. Thermostat location

    Common, and rarely considered

    The thermostat sits in the one part of the house that is always comfortable, so it satisfies while other rooms are still wrong.

  6. A system sized or zoned for a different house

    Common after renovations

    The layout changed - a conversion, an extension, a finished attic - and the ducts were never revisited.

What to do before anyone arrives

  1. Map the house before you diagnose anything

    Note which rooms are wrong, by how much, at what time of day, and in which season. A room that is only bad on summer afternoons is a solar and insulation story. A room that is bad all year is a duct story.

  2. Open every register and check the dampers

    Confirm each register lever is open and nothing is covering it. Closing vents to push air elsewhere raises duct pressure and usually makes the overall problem worse rather than better.

  3. Clear the return grilles and change the filter

    A system starved of return air distributes badly everywhere. This is cheap, fast, and worth ruling out before any conversation about equipment.

  4. Try the fan on ON rather than AUTO for a day

    Running the blower continuously mixes air between floors and often measurably narrows the gap. It costs a little electricity and it is a genuinely useful diagnostic: if it helps, distribution is confirmed as the problem.

  5. Look at the obvious envelope problems

    A room over a garage, a finished attic with thin insulation, or a west-facing room with large windows will always be harder to condition. These are insulation and shading fixes, and they are often cheaper than anything HVAC.

  6. Ask for a duct assessment, not a system quote

    When you call, describe the pattern and ask specifically for the ductwork serving the problem rooms to be inspected and for static pressure to be measured.

    This is the end of the homeowner sequence. Do not go into an attic in summer heat to inspect ducts yourself.

The thing worth internalising: replacing the furnace or the air conditioner is the one expensive option on this list that usually changes nothing, because the new unit inherits the same ducts, the same insulation and the same thermostat position. If a quote for uneven temperatures leads with a system replacement and nobody has inspected the ducts or the insulation, get a second opinion. The only real hazard here is the attic or crawl space where the ducts live. Summer attic temperatures are genuinely dangerous, joists are not a floor, and blown insulation hides both. Leave that inspection to someone equipped for it.

Do the mapping and the free checks first, because they cost nothing and they frame the conversation properly. Then be specific about what you are buying: a duct assessment and an insulation check, not a system quote. The right fix for one stubborn room is often a few hundred dollars of insulation or a single added duct run rather than anything with a compressor in it.

Mostly physics rather than a fault. Warm air rises, the roof above absorbs sun all day, and the ducts serving upstairs are usually the longest runs in the house - often passing through a hot attic on the way. A single thermostat, typically downstairs, satisfies before upstairs has caught up. Continuous fan operation helps by mixing air between floors, and attic insulation usually does more for the problem than anything done to the equipment.
Almost never, and it frequently makes comfort worse. A larger unit cools the space around the thermostat faster and shuts off sooner, which means shorter cycles, less air mixing between rooms and less dehumidification - so the far rooms get even less of the air they were already short of. If the problem is distribution, more capacity does not distribute it. Fix the ducts, the insulation or the balance instead.
Generally no. A forced-air system is designed around a set volume of air moving through the ducts, and closing registers raises pressure, increases leakage at the joints, and reduces total airflow. In some systems it pushes the equipment towards nuisance shutdowns. If a room genuinely needs less air, the right place to reduce it is at the damper as part of balancing the whole system, not by shutting the register.
It can be, but it is not usually the first thing to try. Zoning adds dampers and additional thermostats so different areas can be controlled independently, which directly addresses the stack-effect problem in a two-storey house. It is also a substantial project, and it will not compensate for ducts that leak or insulation that is missing. Fix the cheap distribution and envelope problems first, then consider zoning for what remains.
Because it is exposed on more sides than any other room in the house. It typically has an uninsulated or under-insulated floor over an unconditioned garage, exterior walls on two or three sides, and often a duct run that arrives last and weakest. Insulating the floor between the garage and the room, and air sealing that floor, usually does more than anything that can be adjusted at the equipment.
