Watch for: A rain sensor wire present but not enabled in software. Hardware without configuration is decoration.
Program by zone reality, then walk the yard
Each station gets appropriate days, start times and durations based on plant type — not one default copied across all stations. Every zone is test-run from the new controller. Photograph the old terminal strip before disconnecting anything — memory is a poor wiring diagram.
Watch for: Copy-paste runtimes from the old clock without checking whether zones are turf, shade or drip. Old mistakes migrate cleanly to new hardware.
Controller hardware ranges from inexpensive basic timers to higher-end Wi-Fi models; professional installation is often a modest service call when wiring is clean, more if tracing unlabelled fields or relocating power. Budget labels and a zone map — they prevent the expensive revisit.
