Set depth for the crop’s active roots
Turf probes sit at turf root depth; bed probes match shrub or perennial roots. Too shallow tracks surface noise; too deep lags real stress at the roots that matter. Cable routing and waterproof splices decide whether the reading survives the first wet season.
Watch for: One depth philosophy for lawn and deep beds on a shared sensor. Different plants, different root zones.
Install, protect cable and configure thresholds
Probes are seated in native contact with soil (air gaps ruin readings), cable is protected from edging blades, and thresholds are set with the manufacturer’s guidance plus site observation. Depth should match active root zones for that plant type; turf and trees are not the same probe story.
Watch for: Loose probes in a gravel pocket. They report fiction with high confidence.
Validate across weather and irrigation cycles
After install, compare sensor state to hand checks with a screwdriver or soil probe after irrigation and after dry spells. Thresholds get tuned; they are not fire-and-forget on day one. Choose a station that represents the hydrozone you care about — not the easiest soil to dig.
Watch for: No validation week. Unchecked sensors either never allow watering or never stop it.
Soil moisture kits cost more than basic rain sensors; labour depends on wire runs, number of probes and controller integration complexity. Expect a higher service investment than a simple rain puck, justified when schedule waste — not coverage — is the proven problem.
