Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523Exterior painting is limited by temperature, humidity and dew point, not by the calendar. The workable window is when surfaces stay dry and temperatures stay inside the paint manufacturer's stated range through the drying period — including overnight. Interiors can be painted year-round, and booking interior work in the exterior off-season often gets you better availability.
The constraint on exterior paint is the coating's own specification. Every product has a minimum and maximum application temperature and a drying window, and those apply to the surface and to the hours after application, not just the moment the brush touches the wall. A 55°F afternoon that drops to 35°F overnight can ruin a coat that looked fine at 5 p.m.
Dew point matters as much as temperature. If a surface cools below the dew point before the film has set, moisture condenses on wet paint. This is why good crews stop earlier in the day in fall than in summer, and why a contractor who promises to paint your exterior in any weather is either using a product rated for it or cutting a corner.
Direct sun is the other trap. Painting a hot, sun-facing wall makes paint skin over too fast, causing lap marks and poor adhesion. Crews chase the shade around the house for a reason.
Interiors are mostly season-independent, though humidity still affects dry times and you'll want ventilation. If your job is interior-only, the exterior busy season is a good time to get a better crew with more attention — availability, not price, is usually what you gain.
