Interior house painting is the preparation and coating of walls, ceilings and trim inside the home. The visible part — rolling paint — is a small fraction of the labour. The rest is protection, filling, sanding, caulking, spot-priming and cutting clean lines, and it is where essentially the entire price difference between quotes lives. A typical whole-house repaint runs several days to a couple of weeks depending on how much trim is involved.

How interior house painting actually works

Walkthrough and scope agreement

A proper estimate walks every room and records what is being painted — walls only, or walls plus ceilings plus trim plus doors plus closet interiors — and what condition the surfaces are in. Scope, not square footage, is the price.

Watch for: A quote that says "paint interior" and gives a number. Ceilings, closets, door frames and the inside of the front door are the four things routinely assumed by the homeowner and excluded by the painter.
Protection and masking

Furniture is moved or centred and covered, floors are protected wall to wall, and fixtures, hardware and edges are masked. On a whole-house job this is genuinely a day's work before any paint is opened.

Watch for: A crew that starts painting on day one. Protection is the first visible signal of how the rest of the job will be done.
Cleaning and de-glossing

Surfaces are washed where they are greasy or dusty — kitchens and bathrooms especially — and glossy existing paint is sanded or chemically de-glossed so the new coat has something to grip.

Watch for: New paint applied over an unwashed kitchen wall. Cooking residue is invisible and paint will not bond through it. The failure appears as peeling months later, in exactly the room you least want it.
Filling, sanding and caulking

Holes and dents are filled, cracks opened out and repaired, and the filler sanded flush. Gaps between trim and wall are caulked. This is the single largest labour item on most interior jobs.

Watch for: Filler applied and painted without sanding. It shows permanently under any raking light, and no number of coats hides it. Ask to see a wall after filling and before painting.
Spot priming and full priming

Repairs, bare drywall and stains are primed so they do not flash — appear as dull patches through the finish. Full priming is used for big colour changes, over stains, and on new surfaces.

Watch for: Water stains painted over without a stain-blocking primer. They bleed back through, sometimes within days. This is a specific product choice, not something extra coats solve.
Cutting in and rolling

Edges at ceilings, corners and trim are cut in by brush, and the field is rolled. Ceilings are painted first, then walls, then trim, so overspill runs downhill through the sequence.

Watch for: Wavy or shadowed cut lines at the ceiling. It is the most visible mark of skill in the whole trade, and it is the first thing to look at when you walk a finished room.
Second coat and coverage

Most colour changes need two full coats regardless of what the tin claims. One-coat coverage is a laboratory result over a controlled substrate, not a real-world repaint over a different colour.

Watch for: A quote that does not state a coat count. Get "two coats" written in. It is the most common place a low quote is quietly hiding its saving.
Trim, doors and final inspection

Trim and doors are usually finished last, with a harder-wearing product. The job ends with a walkthrough under good light, with a punch list agreed before the crew packs up.

Watch for: A walkthrough done at dusk or with the lights off. Defects show under side light and daylight. Do the inspection when you can actually see the walls.

Straight answer

When interior house painting is the wrong call

Everyone else ranking for this is paid when you say yes. Here's when you shouldn't.

There is an unresolved moisture source. Paint over a damp wall, a leaking window or a bathroom with no working extraction will peel or grow mildew again. Painting it makes the problem invisible for a season and no shorter.
Drywall or plaster repairs are still needed and are not in the scope. Paint does not conceal bad finishing — sheen makes it more obvious, not less. Fix the substrate first, or accept you are paying to highlight it.
Other trades are still working. Painting before flooring, before cabinetry, or before electrical trim-out means damage and touch-ups. Painting is close to the last thing in.
Your home was built before 1978 and you are planning to sand or scrape. Paint from that era may contain lead, disturbing it is subject to genuine regulation, and the contractor you hire must be operating within those rules. Ask; do not assume, and do not let anyone dry-sand it while you find out.
You want a completely different colour on a tight budget. Dramatic colour changes need priming and two solid coats. Trying to do it in one coat to hit a price produces a patchy result you will repaint sooner than you saved.
The house is being sold and the buyer will redecorate anyway. A neutral touch-up of the worst rooms often shows almost as well as a full repaint for a fraction of the spend. Painting every room to sell is frequently over-investment.

Can I do this myself?

Homes built before 1978 may contain lead-based paint. Sanding, scraping or heat-stripping it is regulated work with real health consequences, particularly for young children and during pregnancy. Confirm the age of the paint before disturbing it, and use a contractor operating under the applicable rules rather than taking anyone's word that it is fine.

Painting a single room with sound, previously painted walls — the classic and entirely reasonable DIY job
Filling and sanding small nail holes and dents
Caulking gaps between trim and wall, which improves almost any room
Cutting in with a brush if you are willing to accept a learning curve on the first wall

Prep is most of the labour. A quote that cannot describe its own prep is quoting paint, not painting.

A competent contractor will already have asked you. If they have not, ask them, and expect a clear process rather than a shrug.

How long does it take to paint a house interior?

A single room is often a day. A whole house is typically several days to a couple of weeks, and the variable is trim: rooms with extensive mouldings, panelled doors and window casings take far longer per square foot than plain walls. Extensive repair work and full priming both extend it further, which is why an accurate schedule requires a walkthrough rather than a floor plan.

Do I really need two coats?

For a colour change, almost always. "One coat coverage" claims come from testing over controlled substrates, not from covering an existing different colour on real walls with patched repairs. Even repainting the same colour, a single coat over a wall with filled repairs tends to flash. Getting the coat count written into the quote is the practical protection.

What sheen should I use in each room?

Broadly, flatter finishes hide surface imperfections and are harder to clean; higher sheens clean well and show every flaw. That trade-off is why bathrooms and kitchens usually run higher sheen than living rooms and bedrooms, and why trim is nearly always finished harder than the walls beside it. On a wall with a lot of repair history, a flatter finish is a genuine kindness.

Do walls need priming before painting?

Not everywhere, but in specific places: bare drywall or plaster, filled repairs, stains, glossy existing paint, and dramatic colour changes. Primer is doing a different job from paint — it seals, blocks and promotes adhesion. Skipping it over a water stain is the classic false economy, because the stain comes back through the finish and no amount of top coats stops it.

Can I stay in the house while it is being painted?

Usually yes, room by room. Modern water-based interior paints are much lower odour than the products they replaced, though sanding dust and displaced furniture are disruptive regardless. If low-emission products matter to you medically, ask for them by name and ventilate well — and expect the schedule to work around whichever rooms you need in use.

Why do painting quotes vary so much?

Prep, coat count and scope, in that order. The paint itself is a small part of the number and is broadly available to everyone. A quote that is meaningfully cheaper is usually buying you fewer hours of filling, sanding, caulking and masking, one coat instead of two, or a scope that quietly excludes ceilings and trim. Compare the scopes before the totals.
