Watch for: A softener plumbed downstream of the water heater. It leaves the heater unprotected from scale, which is one of the main reasons people install a softener at all.
Decide what stays hard

Outside hose bibs and irrigation are usually left on hard water deliberately, and some households leave one drinking tap unsoftened. That branching is decided at the loop and is hard to change afterwards.

Watch for: Nobody asking the question. If the plumber does not raise it, raise it yourself before the pipework is cut.
Bypass valve, drain line and power

A bypass lets you take the softener out of service without shutting the house down, and it needs to be somewhere you can actually reach.

Watch for: A drain line pushed directly into a standpipe with no air gap. It is a cross-connection, a code issue in most jurisdictions, and the most frequently botched part of a DIY install.

Can I install a water softener myself?

Many manufacturers publish DIY instructions, and plenty of people do it where a pre-plumbed loop already exists. Should outdoor taps be on softened water?

Usually not. Softened water offers no benefit to a lawn or garden and salt-regenerated water is generally not desirable for plants, so hose bibs and irrigation are typically left on the hard supply. That decision is made when the loop is built, so raise it before the pipework is cut.

Why is the install quote higher than I expected for a retail unit?
