What is vinyl liner pool installation?
A vinyl liner pool is a structure of steel or polymer wall panels braced and set on a concrete footing, floored with a troweled base, and sealed by a single flexible membrane clipped into a track at the top of the walls. The membrane is what holds the water, and it is a wearing part with a service life measured in years rather than decades. That is the whole bargain: the lowest entry cost of the three inground constructions, in exchange for a replacement you schedule and pay for repeatedly.

How vinyl liner pool installation actually works
Layout, excavation and the footing
The pool is staked and dug, then a concrete footing or collar is formed around the perimeter for the wall panels to sit on and be locked to.

Wall panels braced, squared and plumbed
Panels are bolted together, set on the footing, then braced and adjusted until the whole perimeter is square, level and plumb. Skimmer and return openings are cut into the panels at this stage.

Plumbing and electrical bonding
Suction and return lines are run and pressure-tested, and the metal structure is bonded into the pool's electrical bonding grid before backfill hides everything.

Backfill and the floor
Behind the walls is backfilled and compacted, and the pool floor is built up and troweled - often in a cementitious material or vermiculite mix - to a smooth, hard, fair surface.

Liner measured and manufactured
The finished pool is measured precisely and a liner is made to those dimensions in the pattern you have chosen. This is a lead-time item.
Watch forOrdering from the plan dimensions instead of the as-built ones. Pools do not come out exactly as drawn, and a liner made from the drawing rather than the measurement is the classic cause of a wrinkled fit.
Liner fitted, vacuumed and filled
The liner is hung in the track at the top of the walls and a vacuum is drawn behind it to pull it tight into every contour while the pool is filled. Skimmer and return faceplates are cut and sealed as the water rises.
Watch forWrinkles left in the floor at fill. They are far easier to work out during the vacuum-and-fill than afterwards, and a fitter who is watching the water rise will catch them. Wrinkles also collect grit and wear faster.
Coping, deck and barrier
Coping caps the wall and track, the deck is poured with fall away from the water, and the required barrier goes in before final inspection.

When vinyl liner pool installation is the wrong call

- You want a lot of rockwork, sharp features or a rough natural edge in the water. The membrane needs a smooth, continuous, snag-free surface. Anything abrasive inside the pool is a puncture waiting to happen.
- You want unusual depths, a diving configuration or an integrated vanishing edge. Panel systems build what panel systems build. Pushing them into custom territory loses the cost advantage that was the reason to choose them.
- Your groundwater is high and you have no dewatering plan. Draining a liner pool in wet ground can float the liner or, worse, disturb the structure. Ask specifically how draining for a future liner change will be handled at this site.
- You cannot get a replacement liner locally. In markets where liner pools are rare, the consumable becomes a special order with a long lead time and a limited fitter pool. That converts a routine job into a season out of the water.
