The damage that matters isn’t the dent you can see; it’s the soft bruise where the shingle mat fractured, which leaks years later. What hail damage actually looks like
Hail damage is not a hole. On an asphalt roof it is a fracture in the shingle’s reinforcing mat, usually with granule loss above it, and the roof can look almost normal from the street while being functionally compromised.
Travelers publishes the clearest identification list available from a carrier. On asphalt and composition roofs, look for:
- Random damage with no discernible pattern - this is the single most diagnostic feature, and it’s what separates hail from mechanical damage or manufacturing defects, which appear in lines and patterns
- Hail hits that are black in color
- Loss of granules, which may expose the roof felt
- Shiny asphalt or mat where granules are gone
- Hail hits that are soft to the touch, like the bruise on an apple
That last one is the whole game. A bruise means the mat underneath has fractured. The shingle still sheds water today. In two, three or five years the fracture opens, and the roof leaks long after the claim window closed.
On wood shingles, Travelers describes a random pattern of damage, splits that are brown or orange in color, splits with sharp corners and edges, splits with little deterioration at the edges, and impact marks or dents along the split.
By material more broadly: metal shows dents, scratches and loosened fasteners; concrete and clay tiles show cracking, chipping, and broken or displaced tiles; wood splinters and dents.
The hail size that damages your roof - by material
Most articles give one number. The number depends entirely on what’s on your roof. InterNACHI’s roof inspection curriculum publishes the thresholds that home inspectors are actually trained on:

But size alone doesn’t decide it. InterNACHI identifies impact energy - the combination of size, density and free-fall velocity - as the most important factor influencing damage severity. A soft, low-density stone at 1.25 inches can do less than a dense one at 1 inch.
Fall speeds scale steeply with size, per NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory: under 1 inch falls at 9-25 mph; 1 to 1.75 inches at 25-40 mph; 2 to 4 inches at 44-72 mph; and above 4 inches, over 100 mph. Doubling the diameter roughly doubles the speed and multiplies the mass - which is why 2-inch hail is not twice as damaging as 1-inch hail, it’s far worse.
For scale, NSSL’s reference sizes: pea ¼ inch, marble ½, penny ¾, nickel ⅞, quarter 1 inch, golf ball 1½, tennis ball 2½, baseball 2¾, tea cup 3, grapefruit 4. The National Weather Service raised its severe hail criterion from 0.75 inch to 1.00 inch in 2010.
The largest US hailstone on record was 8 inches in diameter, in Vivian, South Dakota, on June 23, 2010.
Where hail actually happens
NSSL reports that Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming usually have the most hailstorms, and that the area where the three states meet - “hail alley” - averages seven to nine hail days per year.
National Weather Service storm reports tell a slightly different story about volume, because reports track population as well as weather. Across 2021-2025, states leading in reports of 1-inch-or-larger hail were Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Colorado, Missouri, Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa and Illinois, drawn from the NOAA Storm Prediction Center severe weather database.
On the insurance side, the Insurance Information Institute counts 5,432 major hail events in 2025 and 5,373 in 2024, with Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Missouri leading in 2025, and notes that State Farm alone paid over $3.5 billion in hail claims in 2022, more than $1 billion above 2021 (III).
Zooming out further: wind and hail together accounted for 40.7% of homeowners claims by cause of loss in 2022, at a claim frequency of 2.82 per 100 house-years - about 1 in 35 insured homes filing a wind or hail claim per year - with an average severity of $13,511 (III).
How urgent is it, and how to check safely
Urgency comes from the claim clock, not from the roof. Hail damage rarely leaks the week it happens. What expires is your ability to claim it - some policies carry a one-year filing deadline unless you can show good cause for the delay (TDI). A bruise that opens up in year three is a repair you pay for yourself.
So: after any hailstorm with stones at or above the threshold for your material, get it looked at within days to weeks.
The ground-level check anyone can do. Soft metal records hail better than shingles do, and all of it is at eye level:
- Gutters and downspouts - dents and dings
- Air conditioner condenser fins - bent fins are one of the best hail indicators on a property
- Metal vents, roof caps and flashing - InterNACHI notes hard hailstones striking soft thin materials like aluminum vents leave a better indication of their diameter
- Window screens, mailboxes, garage doors, siding, car hoods
- Deck boards and painted surfaces - chipping and spatter marks
- Downspout outlets and the ground at the base - a heavy layer of granules means the roof shed its surface
Then look at the roof itself with binoculars for the dark, random-pattern hits and shiny bare spots.
What you should not do is walk the roof. Hail assessment means reading subtle bruises across every slope - it’s a skilled inspection, not a look-around - and a freshly hailed roof has loose granules underfoot. Inspections run $125-$600 per Angi, and drone inspections up to $550 or more per Forbes. That’s a small price against a $4,250 average repair.

The most-cited number is Angi’s: $4,250 average, with a typical range of $375-$7,500 and an overall span of $150 to $12,500 (Angi). Forbes Home reports the same $4,250 average at roughly $6-$12.50 per square foot, or $600-$1,250 per roofing square, with a high end that can exceed $32,500 on large or premium roofs. This Old House reports lower typical figures - around $940 average, or $4-$7 per square foot - which reflects a different mix of small repairs versus large ones.

When hail means replacement, not repair
Adjusters generally assess damage density - counting hits within a marked test square on each slope and extrapolating to the whole roof. Thresholds vary by carrier and state, so anyone quoting you a universal “X hits per square” number is quoting their local practice, not a national standard.
What pushes toward full replacement:
- Functional damage across multiple slopes. Not appearance - mat fractures that will let water through.
- A roof already advanced in age. Hail on a 19-year-old roof is usually a replacement conversation; on a 4-year-old roof it’s usually a repair.
- Matching problems. If the color is discontinued, a partial repair leaves a permanently visible patch. Some states have matching regulations requiring insurers to restore a reasonably uniform appearance - Ohio and Kentucky both have such rules on the books - so ask your state insurance department what applies where you live.
- Damage to more than the field. Hail that also took out flashing, vents, gutters and ridge caps is a system-wide event.

Impact-rated roofing and what UL 2218 really certifies
Class 4 shingles are the standard recommendation in hail country, and they’re a genuinely good idea - but the certification means something narrower than most homeowners assume.
UL 2218 rates materials by dropping steel balls of increasing size. The class diameters are 1.25 inches (Class 1), 1.50 inches (Class 2), 1.75 inches (Class 3) and 2.00 inches (Class 4), corroborated by DECRA. Each location is struck twice, and the underside is inspected at magnification.
Here’s the part that matters and almost nobody explains: failure is defined by rupture. Per a published explainer of the standard, failure means “any evidence of tearing, fracturing, cracking, splitting, or other openings through the material” - and cosmetic denting and granule loss do not determine pass/fail (LegalClarity). UL’s own pages were not directly retrievable for this article, so treat the drop-height details as secondary sourcing and confirm with the manufacturer for a specific product.
Two consequences:
- A Class 4 roof can be visibly dented and still be doing its job. That’s the standard working as designed.
- That’s precisely the scenario cosmetic damage exclusions target. A dented-but-watertight Class 4 or metal roof is exactly what an excluded policy will decline to pay for.
The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety runs its own hail research program, using lab-manufactured hailstones designed to match the size and density of those collected in the field, fired from a pressurized cannon to replicate real-world impacts, and analyzes insurer claims data alongside post-storm field investigations. Its ratings are worth asking a contractor about alongside the UL class.
Premium discounts for impact-resistant roofing exist - the Texas Department of Insurance notes discounts are available for materials less likely to be damaged by wind, hail or fire, and Colorado’s Division of Insurance advises asking about them - but neither regulator publishes a standard percentage. Get the number from your own carrier rather than from a sales pitch.
The insurance math: deductibles, ACV, and denials
This is where hail claims are won and lost, and it’s the section every competing article skips.
Step 1 - Find your actual deductible. Not the flat $1,000 on the front of your policy. Look for a separate wind/hail or hurricane deductible, which the III says is most commonly expressed as a percentage, typically 1% to 5% of the home’s insured value (III); the NAIC notes these can reach as high as 15% in some markets, and that nearly 30% of surveyed homeowners weren’t sure whether their policy even had one. The III’s worked example: a home insured for $300,000 with a 5% deductible means the first $15,000 of a claim is yours.
Step 2 - Compare it to the estimate. Colorado’s Division of Insurance states it plainly: if damage estimates come in below your deductible, the insurance company will not issue a payment. A $4,250 repair against a $15,000 deductible is not a claim.
Step 3 - Know whether you have ACV or RCV. The Texas Department of Insurance explains that replacement cost value pays up to the full cost to repair at current prices, while actual cash value pays less if the roof is older or showing wear - and that RCV claims are paid in two checks, with the balance released only after repairs start. The Iowa Insurance Division’s explainer adds that under ACV the insurer deducts depreciation for each year of the roof’s age, and that ACV coverage is cheaper but “a claim payment will not replace the roof.” TDI’s worked example: a claim where the actual cash value is $7,000 and the deductible is $2,000 pays out $5,000.
The III adds that roofs over 20 years old typically require an inspection at underwriting, and may be covered only at ACV.
Step 4 - If denied, get it in writing. The Colorado Division of Insurance advises consumers to request an itemized explanation of the settlement and a written letter explaining the reason for the denial and the specific policy language, and to be prepared to negotiate. Regulators only write sentences like that when denials are common. You can also engage a public adjuster - licensed by the state insurance department, typically paid a percentage of the claim - or file a complaint with your regulator.
Step 5 - Watch for the cosmetic exclusion. The Texas Department of Insurance’s bulletin on cosmetic damage endorsements defines cosmetic loss as damage that “alters the physical appearance of the roof covering but does not result in damage that allows the penetration of water through the roof covering or does not result in the failure of the roof covering to perform its intended function.” Under endorsements HO-145 and TDP-022, cosmetic hail damage to roof coverings is excluded while functional hail damage remains covered (TDI Bulletin B-0030-98). Oklahoma’s Insurance Department similarly warns that hail policies may include cosmetic damage exclusions or higher hail deductibles.

Storm chasers and how not to get taken
Hail creates a market for door-knockers, and the pattern is predictable enough that state regulators publish warnings about it.
The Texas Department of Insurance’s post-storm guidance: file as soon as possible; photograph and video the damage; make temporary repairs and keep receipts; avoid contractors who offer to waive your deductible - which is illegal in Texas; never sign blank contracts; and don’t pay in full up front (TDI).
Practical filters:
- Verify license and insurance with the state or county, not with a card the salesperson hands you.
- Read anything before signing it, especially a document described as “just so we can inspect.” Some are assignments of benefits that hand over control of your claim.
- Get more than one estimate, from at least one company that has a local address and existed before the storm.
- Be skeptical of “we’ll cover your deductible.” It’s illegal in many states and it means the estimate to your insurer is inflated.
- Don’t let anyone create damage. It happens, it’s fraud, and you’re the one who signed the claim.

The bottom line
Hail damage is the roofing problem most likely to be real but invisible. The bruise you can’t see from the ground is the one that fractures the mat and leaks after your claim deadline passes - which is why an inspection within weeks of a significant storm is worth far more than the $125-$600 it costs.
