Quick answer: Replacing missing shingles costs about $150-$400 for one to three and $400-$1,200 for five to fifteen. They usually do not leak immediately, because the underlayment underneath buys time - but an exposed edge gives wind something to grab, so gaps spread. The real question is not how many are gone; it’s why they went. Four-nail installation, an unsealed sealant strip, or a roof past its service life all produce the same picture and lead to very different decisions.
What “missing shingles” actually means - and what you’re looking at
A missing shingle is exactly what it sounds like: a shingle that has detached from the roof, leaving the underlayment or, worse, the bare wood decking exposed. From the ground it reads as a dark rectangle, a lighter patch, or a jagged gap along the edge of a course.
Three variations look similar and mean different things:
- A clean gap where the shingle is gone. Straightforward wind uplift or an unsealed shingle.
- A shingle that’s lifted or creased but still attached. The bond is broken and the shingle has hinged. Functionally it has already failed; it just hasn’t left yet. These are what turn into missing shingles in the next storm.
- Exposed nail heads and torn tabs left behind. The shingle tore rather than lifting, which usually means the nails held and the mat did not - an age or brittleness signal.
Where the gap sits also tells you something. Losses at the rake (the sloped edge) and the eave are the classic wind-uplift pattern, because those edges are where wind pressure is highest and where starter strips do or don’t do their job. Losses scattered across the field of the roof, on multiple slopes, point at a sealant or age problem rather than a single gust.

Why shingles blow off - the part nobody explains
Asphalt shingles do not rely on nails alone to stay down. Each shingle has a factory-applied sealant strip that softens in the sun and bonds to the course below, turning individual pieces into a continuous laminated surface. When that bond exists, the roof performs like the label says. When it doesn’t, the roof is just nailed paper.
That’s the mechanism behind almost every blow-off, and it breaks in four ways.
1. The sealant never bonded in the first place. This is the most under-discussed cause in roofing. Owens Corning’s standard limited warranty states that shingles installed in cool weather “may not adequately seal until the season changes,” and that the company is “not responsible for any blow-offs or wind damage that might occur prior to Thermal Sealing.” IBHS field research puts numbers on it: summer-installed test panels went tacky roughly one day after mounting once surface temperatures exceeded 140°F, while winter-installed panels took two weeks for 16 of them to seal and about twelve weeks before all were tacky. Below about 40°F, hand-sealing is typically required.
2. It was nailed with four nails instead of six. Owens Corning’s own warranty language is unambiguous: “110 MPH is standard with 4-nail application. 130 MPH is applicable only with 6-nail application and Owens Corning Starter Shingle products application along eaves and rakes.” Same shingle, same roof, two different wind ratings - decided entirely by the installer. IKO’s application instructions follow the same pattern: four nails standard, six for steep slopes and high-wind areas.
3. The nails were placed wrong. High nailing (above the nail line) and overdriven nails both defeat the fastener without looking wrong from the ground. This is workmanship, not material, and it matters for who pays.
4. The roof is old. Sealant bonds weaken over decades, mats get brittle, and a wind that a 6-year-old roof shrugs off strips a 24-year-old one. Check where you sit with our roof age calculator.
The wind rating confusion, resolved
Here’s something no consumer roofing page seems willing to explain, and it explains a lot of contractor conversations.
There are two ASTM standards for shingle wind resistance, and they produce different-sounding numbers for the same product.

Both are documented in NRCA’s analysis of shingle wind resistance, which notes that the 2016 revision of D7158 restated classes in terms of ultimate design wind speed and that NRCA recommends using D7158 cautiously until it is revised for ASCE 7-16. The two numbering conventions are why the same shingle gets quoted at both 150 mph and 190 mph - one is an allowable-stress figure, the other an ultimate design figure. The IRC accepts D7158 Class H, and D3161 Class F, for use at all wind speeds (IRC R905.2.6.1).
The punchline comes from IBHS: “virtually any shingle that achieves an ‘F’ rating from ASTM D3161 also achieves an ‘H’ rating using ASTM D7158.” So a shingle marketed as “110 mph” and one marketed as “150 mph” can be physically identical. IKO’s own bulletin describes Class H as “a theoretical 150 mph” and notes that D7158 compliance “in no way affects/changes the Limited Wind Warranty coverage.”
What this means for you, practically: do not shop on the wind number alone, and do not assume a shingle that blew off in a 70 mph gust was defective because the box said 130 mph. Ask instead how many nails were used, whether starter strip was installed at eaves and rakes, and what month the roof went on.
How urgent is it? A realistic timeline
Missing shingles occupy an awkward middle ground: not an emergency, not something to file away either.
They usually do not leak right away. Underlayment sits beneath the shingles as a secondary water barrier, and on a modern roof with synthetic underlayment it can shed water for a while. The IRC requires underlayment beneath asphalt shingles and doubles the requirement on slopes between 2:12 and 4:12 (IRC R905.2 via UpCodes) - that redundancy is why your ceiling isn’t dripping.
But it degrades. Underlayment is designed to spend its life in the dark. Direct UV and rain break it down, and the timeline is weeks to months, not years.
And the gap spreads. This is the real reason to move. An exposed shingle edge gives wind a lever. The next storm lifts the adjacent shingle, then the next course. Roofers call the failure mode unzipping, and it’s why a two-shingle problem becomes a two-slope problem across one bad season.
Use this triage:
- Same day: bare decking is visible, torn underlayment, a large contiguous area gone, or heavy rain forecast. Ask about a tarp.
- Within one to two weeks: the normal case - a handful of shingles gone, underlayment intact, no active leak.
- Before winter, at minimum: any loss in a cold climate, because freeze-thaw and ice at the eave will find the gap.

How to check the damage safely
From the ground, with binoculars. This finds most of it, and it is where you should start and usually stop. Walk the full perimeter of the house and scan each slope in overlapping bands. Look for:
- Obvious gaps and color mismatch in the field
- Shingles that are lifted, curled or creased but still attached - count these, they matter as much as the missing ones
- Loss concentrated at rakes and eaves versus scattered across the field
- Granules in the gutters and at downspout outlets, which indicate general wear rather than a discrete blow-off
- Exposed nail heads
In the yard. Actually collect the shingles that came off. They tell a story: a clean back face with intact tar strip means the sealant never bonded; nail holes torn through the shingle means the mat failed; a shingle that snaps rather than bends when you flex it is brittle with age.
In the attic. Look for daylight through the deck, damp sheathing, and stained rafters below the affected area. Step only on joists, use a headlamp.
Photograph everything, with dates. If this becomes a claim, dated photos from the day after the storm are the most valuable evidence you have.
Do not climb up. CDC and NIOSH data recorded 113 fatalities and roughly 15,460 nonfatal lost-time injuries from occupational ladder falls in a single year among people who do it professionally. A roof missing shingles is also a roof with loose material and a compromised walking surface.
Repair options and what they cost in 2026
Replacing missing shingles runs about $150-$400 for one to three shingles, $400-$1,200 for five to fifteen, and $1,200-$2,500 for a large section, per RoofClaim’s 2026 figures. This Old House lists missing or damaged shingle line items from $50-$800 and reports an average asphalt roof repair around $975.
Why does three shingles cost $250 when a bundle costs $30-$40? Because you are not buying shingles. You’re buying a truck, two people, ladder setup, fall safety, and an hour on a roof - plus, done properly, the removal and re-nailing of the courses above the repair so the new shingle can be fastened correctly and the water path is not interrupted.

Three things that change the price:
- Whether the deck under the gap is wet. If underlayment failed and the sheathing has been soaking, decking work gets added, and it is not cheap.
- Matching. Discontinued colors and weathering mean the patch will be visible. Owens Corning’s warranty includes an explicit color-match disclaimer.
- Weather at repair time. A cold-weather repair should be six-nailed and hand-sealed with roofing cement per IKO’s guidance. If a contractor won’t do that in February, wait or find one who will.

Why a repair is often the wrong answer
Sometimes the honest recommendation is a new roof, and the tell isn’t the number of missing shingles. It’s the pattern.
Replace rather than repair when:
- Blow-offs keep happening in ordinary wind. If 45 mph storms are stripping shingles, the sealant bonds across the whole roof have failed, and repairing this month’s gap does nothing about next month’s.
- Loss is spread across multiple slopes. A single-slope, single-storm loss is localized damage. Loss on the north, south and west faces is a roof-wide condition.
- The roof is near end of service life and shows the companion signs: bald granule-loss patches, curling edges, shingles that crack when flexed.
- The decking is soft. Once sheathing has been wet long enough to lose fastener grip, patching over it just relocates the problem.
- Repair costs approach half of replacement. This Old House uses a working threshold of roughly more than 30% of the roof being substantially damaged.
There’s also a matching argument that cuts both ways. On a 3-year-old roof, a patch will be slightly visible and that’s fine. On a 20-year-old roof with a discontinued color, the patch will look like a patch forever - and you’re paying repair money for a roof you’ll replace in two years anyway.

Preventing the next blow-off
Everything that keeps shingles on a roof happens at installation. That’s the uncomfortable truth of this problem - most of the leverage is gone by the time you own the roof. But not all of it.
When you buy a roof:
- Specify six-nail application in the contract, not just in conversation. It is the difference between 110 mph and 130 mph on Owens Corning’s own rating table, and it costs very little.
- Require starter strip at both eaves and rakes. The high-wind rating depends on it.
- Ask which ASTM standard the quoted rating uses. A contractor who can explain D3161 versus D7158 is a contractor who reads the installation instructions.
- Avoid cold-weather installs where you can, and where you can’t, require hand-sealing. IKO’s stated best range is 40-85°F.
- Get the workmanship warranty in writing. Owens Corning’s material warranty excludes “improper or faulty installation” - which means installation failures are the installer’s problem, and you want that promise on paper. On a roof you already own:
- Inspect after every significant wind event, from the ground.
- Have lifted or creased shingles re-sealed before they leave. That’s cheap; replacing them isn’t.
- Keep trees trimmed back from the roof plane.
- If you’re in a high-wind region and replacing anyway, look at impact-resistant shingles and higher-rated architectural shingles rather than 3-tab.
The insurance question - and the deductible math
Wind is a covered peril. The Insurance Information Institute lists windstorm and hail among the perils standard homeowners policies cover, alongside fire, lightning, explosion and riot (III). The same source states that policies do not cover damage due to lack of maintenance - which is the line your adjuster will be looking for.
So the first question isn’t “is this covered.” It’s “is this worth claiming.”
Do the arithmetic before you call:
- Get the repair estimate. Three missing shingles at $250.
- Find your deductible - including any separate wind or hail deductible. The NAIC specifically advises asking whether separate wind or hail deductibles apply, and these are often a percentage of the dwelling value rather than a flat amount.
- Compare. If the repair is less than the deductible, a claim gets you nothing and puts a loss on your record.
Where claims make sense is the other scenario: widespread storm loss where the realistic outcome is a replacement, not a patch.
If you are claiming, three rules:
- Document before you touch anything. Dated photos, from the ground, of every affected slope, plus the shingles in the yard.
- Mitigate but don’t repair. The Texas Department of Insurance is direct: make temporary repairs to prevent further damage, keep a list, save receipts - and do not make permanent repairs before the adjuster sees the damage. Owens Corning’s warranty says the same thing from the manufacturer’s side: repairs made before a determination may be denied.
- Know your payout basis. The III notes insurers may cover older roofs at actual cash value, with depreciation deducted, and that roofs over 20 years old typically require an inspection. The NAIC’s explainer on replacement cost versus actual cash value is worth ten minutes before you file.
Deadlines are shorter than most people assume and vary by state and policy - Florida statute, for instance, requires notice within one year of the date of loss. A few missing shingles is a $150-$400 problem this month and potentially a roof-scale problem next year, because the exposed edge is what lets wind take the next one. Underlayment buys you weeks, not seasons.
Before you decide anything, answer the why. If the shingles came off in a genuinely severe storm on a healthy roof, repair it and move on. If they came off in ordinary wind, on multiple slopes, or on a roof past 20, the sealant bonds have failed roof-wide and you are looking at replacement whether or not you patch it first.
