Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523If siding has been torn off, the priority is stopping water from entering the wall, not restoring appearance. Make the area safe, cover exposed sheathing with a temporary weather barrier, photograph everything before any cleanup, and notify your insurer. Do not sign a repair contract with a door-to-door contractor in the first days.
Exposed sheathing soaks up water fast, and wet sheathing is what turns a panel problem into a framing problem. A temporary covering — housewrap or heavy sheeting, mechanically fastened and lapped so water sheds downward — buys you weeks to make good decisions. Tape alone fails in wind and rain.
Safety first, though. Do not go up a ladder in wind. Do not touch siding near a downed or sagging power line. Damaged aluminum panels have sharp edges. If your gas meter or electrical service entrance is involved, call the utility before you touch anything.
Then document, and document before you clean up. Photos of every elevation, close-ups of damage, the debris, and a note of the date and storm. Insurers settle from evidence. Once documented, notify the insurer and get the adjuster's scope before committing to a contractor.
