Siding warranties

A siding job carries two separate warranties: the manufacturer's product warranty covering defects in the material, and the contractor's workmanship warranty covering installation. Most leaks are installation problems, so the workmanship warranty is the one that matters most — and it is the one most often left out of the contract.

Product warranties cover manufacturing defects: cracking, splitting, warping, excessive fading. They typically do not cover installation error, and installation error is the cause of most real-world siding failures. Terms vary by manufacturer and product line, so the only reliable source is the warranty document for the exact product going on your house.

Things to look for in that document, because they materially change the value: whether coverage is prorated (declining payout with age), whether it is transferable and how many times, whether it pays for labor or only replacement material, what weather events are excluded, and any registration deadline after installation.

The workmanship warranty should be a separate written clause in your contract with a stated term. Ask what it covers — leaks, fastening, flashing — and what happens if the company ceases trading. A workmanship warranty is only worth the solvency of the company behind it, which is another argument for hiring established local firms over whoever knocked on the door after a storm.

How to choose

Two documents, always
Manufacturer product warranty plus contractor workmanship warranty, both in writing, before final payment.
Check for proration
Many long-term siding warranties reduce what they pay as the product ages. Find the schedule and know what year 15 actually pays.
Check transferability
If you may sell, coverage that transfers is worth something at resale. Many warranties limit transfers to one, with a deadline.
Labor is often excluded
A material-only warranty means the manufacturer sends panels and you pay a crew to hang them. Ask directly.
Register on time
Missed registration windows are the most common reason claims fail. Diarize it the day the job is finished.
Keep evidence
Contract, product name and color, photos of the open wall and flashing, and the installer's certification. Claims are won with documentation.

FAQ

Siding warranties — common questions

Still have a question? Talk to our team →

It depends entirely on the document. Some warranties address weather damage and some exclude it or apply wind-speed thresholds. Storm damage is often a homeowners insurance matter rather than a warranty matter.
Usually the workmanship warranty, because leaks are typically flashing and installation issues rather than product defects.
It varies by contractor — there's no industry standard. Ask each bidder for their term in writing and treat a refusal to put it in writing as disqualifying.
Workmanship coverage generally dies with the company. That risk is why longevity, local presence, and verified insurance matter more than a long promised warranty.
