Seasonal siding

The real seasonal risk is not the material, it's the open wall. Tear-off exposes sheathing, and rain on exposed sheathing is the thing you're paying to prevent. Ask any contractor what their protocol is if weather turns mid-job: how much wall they open per day, and how they dry-in overnight. A crew that opens a whole elevation on a day with rain forecast is telling you something.

Scheduling has a money dimension too. Demand peaks after storms and in good-weather months, and that's when the door-knockers appear. Booking in a slower window generally gets you the contractor's own crew rather than subcontracted overflow, which matters more for quality than the calendar month does.

Twice a year, walk the house. Spring: look for winter damage, opened caulk, and ice-dam staining at eaves. Fall: clear gutters, check that downspouts discharge away from walls, and trim vegetation back off the siding. These two walks are the cheapest siding maintenance that exists.

How to choose

Mild and dry is easiest

Less risk to open walls, easier material handling. Not a hard requirement, but it removes a category of problem.

Ask the weather protocol

How much wall gets opened per day, and how it's dried in overnight. Get the answer before signing.

Cold-weather vinyl needs care

Vinyl gets brittle when cold and moves a lot with temperature. Fastening and cut gaps must be adjusted — ask if the crew has done winter installs of this product.

Spring walk-around

Caulk joints, ice-dam staining, loose panels from winter wind, bottom-course ground contact.

Fall walk-around

Gutters clear, downspouts discharging away from the house, vegetation trimmed back off the walls.

Book off-peak if you can

Post-storm and peak season means overflow subcontractors. Slower periods usually get you the company's own crew.
