Security camera wiring is the physical layer of a camera system: running network cable from a switch or recorder to each mounting position, delivering power over that same cable, terminating it so it survives outdoors, and testing every run before anything is closed up. Siting the switch and the recorder before pulling anything
Every run is measured from wherever the switch lives, so that location is decided first. It needs mains power, ventilation, physical security and somewhere the noise does not bother anybody. Central beats convenient, because it shortens every run in the building.
Watch for: Equipment put in a sealed cupboard, a hot loft or an unheated garage. Thermal shutdowns and drive failures in recorders are overwhelmingly a location problem rather than an equipment one.
Choosing power over Ethernet and sizing it honestly
Delivering power down the same cable as the data is what makes this approach worth the trouble — one cable per position, no outdoor adapters, and everything backed up centrally if the switch is. The switch has both a per-port limit and a total power budget, and cameras with heaters or motors draw considerably more than plain ones.
Watch for: A power budget that only just covers the cameras being fitted today. Heated housings and pan-tilt units draw far more, and the failure mode of an over-committed switch is cameras dropping out intermittently rather than anything obvious.
Planning cable paths through the structure
The route matters more than the distance. Vertical runs in interior walls, a loft or basement to travel horizontally, and a single planned penetration per exterior position is the pattern. Runs are kept away from mains cable where they parallel it, and anything crossing a fire separation has to be firestopped where it passes through.
Watch for: Cable run alongside mains conductors for a long parallel distance. It is the classic cause of intermittent, hard-to-diagnose faults that look like a bad camera and are actually the route.
Fishing cable into finished walls
In a finished, insulated house this is most of the labour. Fire blocking, top plates, bracing, ducts, pipework and blown insulation all get in the way, and the skill is choosing routes that need the fewest access holes and putting those holes where they are easy to make good.
Watch for: A price quoted without anyone looking in the loft or under the floor. Retrofit routing cannot be estimated remotely, and the same run in the same-sized house varies enormously with construction.
Getting through the exterior wall properly
Each penetration is drilled with a slight downward slope to the outside, sleeved, and sealed with a sealant compatible with the cladding. Where possible the cable enters directly behind the camera bracket so no cable is exposed at all — which is both tidier and much harder to cut.
Watch for: Exposed cable looping down an exterior wall to a camera. It lets water track along the cable into the hole, and it hands anyone with a pair of cutters the whole camera.
Terminating and weatherproofing the outdoor end
Outdoor terminations need connectors and boots rated for the exposure, with the joint either inside the camera housing or in a properly rated enclosure. Any service loop is left so the joint sits below the entry point, so water runs away from it rather than into it.
Watch for: An indoor connector taped up and left in the open. It is the single most common failure in outdoor camera cabling — it survives a season, then corrodes, and the fault presents months later as a camera that reboots when it rains.
Testing every run before anything closes
Each run is tested for correct wiring and continuity, ideally with a tester that reports the actual performance of the link rather than just confirming the pairs are in the right order. This happens before walls are made good, because a run that fails afterwards is a much larger problem.
Watch for: Runs proved only by plugging a camera in and seeing a picture. A marginal link shows a picture on a mild day and drops out under load, at range, or in the cold.
Labelling and documenting the installation
Both ends of every run get the same label, and a simple schedule records which port serves which position and where the cable travels. It takes minutes now and it is the difference between a ten-minute fault diagnosis and an afternoon of tracing.
Watch for: A patch panel or switch with no labels. It is the state most retrofit installations end up in, and every future change costs more because of it.
Cabling is priced by access rather than by camera count. A run through an open loft to a single-storey eave is quick; the same run into a finished two-storey wall with blown insulation is a different job. Cabling during construction costs a fraction of retrofit. See the Cost Guide.

Network cable itself is low voltage and harmless to handle. The hazards in this job are the ladder and the drill: most camera positions are at height, and drilling blind through an exterior wall risks mains cable, gas and water services in the cavity. Check what is behind before boring, and never work at height alone.
Where are you putting the switch, and is that location ventilated?
Every run is measured from it and the equipment lives or dies by its temperature. It is decided once and it is awkward to change.
What is the total power budget of the switch, and how much am I using?
Heated housings and moving cameras draw far more than plain ones. An over-committed switch drops cameras intermittently, which is a miserable fault to chase.
How is each exterior penetration being sealed?
A sloped, sleeved and correctly sealed hole is the difference between a dry wall and a damp patch that appears next winter.
Are the outdoor terminations rated for outdoors?
Indoor connectors wrapped in tape are the commonest failure in this trade, and they fail long after the installer has been paid.
Will you test and certify every run before making good?
A marginal link passes a plug-it-in test and fails under load six months later, by which time the wall is closed and painted.
Are you leaving spare capacity — spare cable or spare ports?
Camera counts grow. A spare run pulled today costs almost nothing; the same run later costs the whole access job again.
Who makes good the holes, and is decorating included?
Retrofit routing means access holes. Whether patching and painting are in scope is the most common billing dispute on this job.
