Security camera wiring - the cable, not the camera

What is security camera wiring?
Security camera wiring is the physical layer of a camera system: running network cable from a switch or recorder to each mounting position, delivering power over that same cable, terminating it so it survives outdoors, and testing every run before anything is closed up. It is a separate job from choosing cameras and designing coverage - that belongs with our Home Security camera installation guide and is not covered here.
Signs you need security camera wiring
- Your battery cameras need charging on a schedule and you have decided you are done with that
- Wireless cameras at the edges of the property drop out, freeze, or record clips that arrive minutes late
- You want continuous recording rather than event clips, which is a far heavier load than a wireless link comfortably carries
- You have several cameras and a stack of separate power adapters at outdoor outlets, which is both fragile and untidy
- The building is being renovated, re-sided or re-roofed, so exterior cable paths are briefly available and about to close
- Existing camera cable was run in a hurry - draped over gutters, stapled through insulation, or terminated with connectors never intended for outdoors
- You have a recorder in a hot cupboard that shuts itself down in the summer

How security camera wiring actually works
Siting the switch and the recorder before pulling anything
Every run is measured from wherever the switch lives, so that location is decided first. It needs mains power, ventilation, physical security and somewhere the noise does not bother anybody. Central beats convenient, because it shortens every run in the building.
Watch forEquipment put in a sealed cupboard, a hot loft or an unheated garage. Thermal shutdowns and drive failures in recorders are overwhelmingly a location problem rather than an equipment one.
Choosing power over Ethernet and sizing it honestly
Delivering power down the same cable as the data is what makes this approach worth the trouble - one cable per position, no outdoor adapters, and everything backed up centrally if the switch is. The switch has both a per-port limit and a total power budget, and cameras with heaters or motors draw considerably more than plain ones.

Planning cable paths through the structure
The route matters more than the distance. Vertical runs in interior walls, a loft or basement to travel horizontally, and a single planned penetration per exterior position is the pattern. Runs are kept away from mains cable where they parallel it, and anything crossing a fire separation has to be firestopped where it passes through.

Fishing cable into finished walls
In a finished, insulated house this is most of the labour. Fire blocking, top plates, bracing, ducts, pipework and blown insulation all get in the way, and the skill is choosing routes that need the fewest access holes and putting those holes where they are easy to make good.

Getting through the exterior wall properly
Each penetration is drilled with a slight downward slope to the outside, sleeved, and sealed with a sealant compatible with the cladding. Where possible the cable enters directly behind the camera bracket so no cable is exposed at all - which is both tidier and much harder to cut.

Terminating and weatherproofing the outdoor end
Outdoor terminations need connectors and boots rated for the exposure, with the joint either inside the camera housing or in a properly rated enclosure. Any service loop is left so the joint sits below the entry point, so water runs away from it rather than into it.
Watch forAn indoor connector taped up and left in the open. It is the single most common failure in outdoor camera cabling - it survives a season, then corrodes, and the fault presents months later as a camera that reboots when it rains.
Testing every run before anything closes
Each run is tested for correct wiring and continuity, ideally with a tester that reports the actual performance of the link rather than just confirming the pairs are in the right order. This happens before walls are made good, because a run that fails afterwards is a much larger problem.

Labelling and documenting the installation
Both ends of every run get the same label, and a simple schedule records which port serves which position and where the cable travels. It takes minutes now and it is the difference between a ten-minute fault diagnosis and an afternoon of tracing.

When security camera wiring is the wrong call
When saying yes is the wrong move:
- You are renting. Wired camera runs mean penetrations through the landlord's exterior wall and holes in their finishes. Wireless cameras are the version of this you can take with you and are not a compromise for a short stay.
- The building is about to be re-sided, re-roofed or rendered. Wait. Exterior penetrations made now get disturbed by that work, and doing it during gives you free access to routes that will otherwise be sealed.
- You want one camera on the porch where there is already an outlet. The cabling job exists to serve several positions from a central point. For a single camera by an existing outlet, running cable across the house is disproportionate.
- You have not decided how many positions you want. The switch, the recorder location and the cable paths all get sized from that number. Pulling cable twice costs far more than pulling spares once.
- The mounting positions have not been settled. Coverage design comes before cable, because moving a run afterwards means new holes in a wall you just made good. Settle the positions first, on our Home Security guide, then cable to them.
- Your reason is that a wireless camera drops out. Sometimes it is; often the network is the problem and cable to an access point fixes several things at once. Establish which before committing to camera runs.

- Running cable in accessible, open spaces - an unfinished basement, an accessible loft, a garage
- Pulling spare runs while walls are already open during other building work
- Making up a patch cable and testing it with a basic wiring tester
- Labelling both ends of every run and drawing up the schedule
- Siting and setting up the switch and recorder somewhere ventilated and accessible
Call a licensed pro
- Fishing cable through finished, insulated walls, where route choice and making good are the actual skill
- Exterior penetrations and weatherproofing, which is where retrofit camera cabling most often fails
- Work at height - eaves, gables and second-storey positions
- Runs crossing a fire separation between floors or into a garage, which need firestopping
- Any new mains circuit or outlet for the switch or recorder, which is licensed work
- Certified testing of the finished runs, which needs equipment nobody owns for one job
What to check when hiring for security camera wiring
- Where are you putting the switch, and is that location ventilated? Every run is measured from it and the equipment lives or dies by its temperature. It is decided once and it is awkward to change.
- What is the total power budget of the switch, and how much am I using? Heated housings and moving cameras draw far more than plain ones. An over-committed switch drops cameras intermittently, which is a miserable fault to chase.
- How is each exterior penetration being sealed? A sloped, sleeved and correctly sealed hole is the difference between a dry wall and a damp patch that appears next winter.
- Are the outdoor terminations rated for outdoors? Indoor connectors wrapped in tape are the commonest failure in this trade, and they fail long after the installer has been paid.
- Will you test and certify every run before making good? A marginal link passes a plug-it-in test and fails under load six months later, by which time the wall is closed and painted.
- Are you leaving spare capacity - spare cable or spare ports? Camera counts grow. A spare run pulled today costs almost nothing; the same run later costs the whole access job again.
- Who makes good the holes, and is decorating included? Retrofit routing means access holes. Whether patching and painting are in scope is the most common billing dispute on this job.
