Tree maintenance

Established trees need three things: correct pruning to standard, a proper mulch ring, and someone paying attention to changes. The International Society of Arboriculture calls mulching "one of the most beneficial practices a homeowner can use for better tree health." Fertilizing a healthy tree, annual "maintenance" trimming, and topping are commonly sold and rarely necessary.

ISA identifies four legitimate pruning types. Cleaning is "removal of dead, dying, diseased, weakly attached, and low-vigor branches from the crown." Raising removes lower branches for clearance. Thinning reduces foliage density "to increase wind or light penetration." Reduction reduces size, often for utility clearance, cutting back to secondary branches "at least one-third the diameter of the cut stem." If a quote does not name which of these it is buying you, ask.

Timing: ISA says the optimal window is "before the spring growth flush," and warns against "heavy pruning of live tissue just after the spring growth flush, especially on weak trees." It also notes that susceptible species should not be pruned during periods of active disease transmission — oak wilt is the classic example, and the risk window is regional, so ask your local extension service or arborist for your area's dates.

The highest-return maintenance you will ever buy is structural pruning on a young tree. ISA notes young trees pruned for structure develop "a strong structure and desirable form," avoiding "corrective pruning as they mature." A hundred dollars of thoughtful cuts at year five prevents a thousand-dollar problem at year twenty-five.

Mulch correctly or do not bother. ISA lists the benefits — reduced evaporation, weed suppression, insulation from temperature swings — but also warns that "improper mulching can produce negative effects." Piling mulch against the trunk holds moisture on bark that is not adapted to it. Keep the mulch off the trunk and spread it wide and shallow instead of deep and narrow.

How to choose

Prune young trees, monitor old ones
Structural pruning in the first decade is the best money in tree care. Heavy pruning on a mature tree is usually a response to a problem, not maintenance.
Never accept topping
ISA calls topping "the most harmful tree pruning practice known," causing "unacceptable risk, tree stress, and decay." A company that offers to top your tree has told you what they are.
Mulch wide, not deep, and never against the trunk
A broad shallow ring out toward the drip line, with bare ground at the trunk flare. Volcano mulch piles are actively harmful.
Do not fertilize by default
Fertilizer treats a nutrient deficiency. If there is no diagnosed deficiency, you are paying for a truck visit. Ask what the soil test showed.
Ask about disease transmission windows before pruning
ISA notes susceptible trees should not be pruned during active transmission periods. The dates are regional — your extension service will know yours.

There is no universal interval, and any company selling you an annual schedule for every tree is selling a subscription. Young trees benefit from structural pruning every few years. Mature trees are pruned when there is a reason — deadwood, clearance, storm damage, a structural defect. Have them inspected yearly; prune when the inspection says to.
Topping is cutting large limbs back to stubs to reduce a tree's height. ISA calls it "the most harmful tree pruning practice known." The wounds invite decay, the regrowth is weakly attached and more likely to fail, and the tree loses the foliage it needs to feed itself. It makes a tree more dangerous, not less.
ISA points to the period before the spring growth flush as the general optimum, and warns against heavy live-tissue pruning just after that flush, especially on weak trees. Dead branch removal can be done anytime. Species-specific disease windows override the general rule.
Only if a diagnosis says to. Trees in a lawn that gets fertilized are often already getting nutrients. Routine fertilization sold without a soil test is a revenue product, not a treatment.
