Seasonal tree care

Late winter and early spring, before bud break. ISA points to the period "before the spring growth flush" as the general optimum for pruning. Structure is visible, most pests and pathogens are inactive, and the tree responds with a full growing season ahead of it. This is also when to do your annual walk-around of large trees.

Late spring. ISA specifically warns against "heavy pruning of live tissue just after the spring growth flush, especially on weak trees." The tree has just spent its stored energy pushing new growth. Dead branch removal is still fine any time. This is also the season when regional disease transmission windows bite hardest — ask locally before pruning susceptible species.

Summer. Watering matters, particularly for young and newly planted trees during drought. Mulch is doing its job here — ISA cites reduced moisture loss through evaporation and insulation against temperature extremes as key benefits. Summer is also when decline symptoms show: thin crowns, small leaves, early color.

Fall and storm season. Get deadwood over your house, driveway and power drop dealt with before the wind arrives, not after. Emergency work costs far more — Fixr puts emergency removal at two to three times standard rates — and the same work booked calmly in advance is cheaper and safer. If your region has a defined hurricane, ice or wildfire season, do the discretionary work outside it.

How to choose

Inspect in winter, act in late winter

Bare branches make defects visible, and pruning before the spring flush is ISA's general optimum. One trip covers both.

Do not prune heavily right after leaf-out

ISA flags this specifically, especially for already-weak trees. Deadwood removal is the exception and can happen any time.

Handle deadwood before storm season

Emergency removal runs two to three times standard cost per Fixr. Pre-storm scheduling is the cheapest insurance in tree care.

Water young trees through drought

New plantings are far more vulnerable than mature trees. Deep, infrequent watering beats frequent shallow watering.

Book off-peak if you can wait

Tree crews are slammed after storms and in peak season. Non-urgent work scheduled in a quiet window usually gets more attention and often a better price.
