Stump grinding vs stump removal - they are not the same job

What is stump grinding?

Stump grinding uses a rotating cutting wheel to reduce a stump - and the top of the root flare around it - to chips, typically to a depth agreed in advance. It does not take out the root system. Stump removal means excavating the root plate entirely, which needs heavier machinery, disturbs far more ground and leaves a substantial hole to backfill. Grinding suits nearly every lawn and garden situation. Excavation is for when something structural is going where the roots are.

Signs you need stump grinding

• A tree has been removed and the cut stump is still sitting proud of the lawn
• You are mowing around a stump and have already hit it once
• Mushrooms, ants or beetles have colonised the stump, which is normal decay but tends to spread to nearby wood
• Shoots are sprouting from the stump or from surface roots several feet away - some species will keep doing this for years
• You want to replant, re-turf, lay a patio or run a fence line across the spot
• The stump is a trip hazard on a path, near a play area, or on a route you use at night

How stump grinding actually works

   Agreeing a depth, in inches, in writing

   A few inches below grade is enough to re-turf over. Deeper is needed if you intend to plant, and deeper still if anything is going to be built or paved. The depth is the specification of this job.

   Watch forA quote with no depth on it. This is the single most common dispute in stump work: the crew grinds shallow, the customer expected deep, and there is nothing written down to settle it.

   Locating utilities and irrigation before the wheel turns

   Grinders cut well below grade in an area that frequently contains irrigation lines, low-voltage lighting cable, gas service, and shallow utility runs. A locate request is placed and the visible items are flagged.

   Watch forGrinding started the same hour it was quoted with nothing marked. Utility locates take time to come back, and the crew that skips the wait is gambling with your service lines rather than theirs.

   Grinding the stump and the flare roots

   The wheel is worked side to side, taking the stump down in passes and following the buttress roots outward as far as the agreed scope goes. Boards or screens go up because grinders throw stone and debris hard.

   Watch forOnly the visible stump being ground while the flare roots are left as ridges under the turf. They will show through the lawn within a season.

   Deciding what happens to the chips

   Grinding produces a surprising volume of chip and soil mixture - usually much more than the stump appeared to contain. It can be mounded and left to settle, spread as mulch elsewhere, or hauled away.

   Watch forAssuming haul-away is included. It is often a separate line, and if the chips are left in the hole the ground will settle noticeably over the following months and need topping up.

   Backfill and finish

   If you are re-turfing, the chip is removed and the void filled with topsoil, because grindings are poor growing medium and will slump. If you are leaving it, expect to come back with soil twice as it settles.

What does stump grinding cost?

Most residential stumps run roughly $100 to $500 each, with price driven by diameter, grind depth, access for the machine and whether chips are hauled away. Full excavation of the root plate costs considerably more. Grinding several stumps on one visit is markedly cheaper per stump than booking them separately.
