Tree bracing uses rigid rods — typically threaded steel — installed through a weak fork, split or multi-stem union to limit further parting and torsion at that joint. Cables high in the canopy limit how far stems can spread; braces stiffen the joint itself. Both are mitigations. Neither regrows lost wood or makes a hollow trunk whole.

Confirm the union is a bracing candidate
Sound wood must exist on both sides of the defect to bite the rod. Advanced decay, a fully separated split, or a failing root plate takes bracing off the table in favour of reduction or removal. This step is a go/no-go, not a sales script.
Watch for: Rods proposed after a kerbside glance. Drilling a rotten union can accelerate failure and create a false sense of security.
Specify rod count, diameter and pattern
Bracing is engineered for the union geometry — often multiple rods at defined spacing and heights through the fork. Guessing with one random bolt is not a system, and the written specification should list count, size and placement so a future inspector can verify the install.
Watch for: A single lag screw or hardware-store bolt run partway into one stem. That is not tree bracing; it is a puncture.
Drill and install without crushing cambium
Holes are sized for the rod system, washers or hubs seat properly, and nothing wraps the circumference in a way that will girdle as the tree grows. Hardware must allow for diameter growth over years rather than clamping bark like a hose clamp.
Watch for: Tight bands, cable clamps around the bark, or plates that will be engulfed without a maintenance plan. Girdling “support” kills the limb it was meant to save.
Pair with cabling or pruning when the loads demand it
Many specifications combine through-rods at the union with cables higher in the stems, plus end-weight reduction so the hardware is not asked to do everything in a wind event the tree was never shaped for.
Watch for: Bracing sold as a complete substitute for reducing an overextended limb. Hardware plus leverage still loses to physics eventually.
Document inspection intervals
Rods loosen, corrode, and become buried in new wood. The installation is incomplete without a re-inspection cycle written into the handover, including who is responsible after a property sale if you can plan that far.
Watch for: No mention of follow-up. Unmaintained braces are scenery; they are not a risk plan.
Through-rod bracing on a residential co-dominant fork commonly runs from several hundred dollars into the low thousands when multiple rods, access and companion cables are required. Budget periodic inspection separately — the hardware is a long-term obligation, not a one-time product purchase.
