What is tree cutting?

Tree cutting in the open-fell sense means bringing a tree down in one piece with directional notching and a controlled hinge, rather than dismantling it section by section from a climb or crane. It is a method, not a separate service category from removal - but homeowners search it when they have open ground and want to know whether a full drop is realistic. Access and landing zone decide; height alone does not.

Signs you need tree cutting

• There is a clear, long landing lane free of buildings, power lines, vehicles and valuable plantings
• The tree’s natural lean already points into open space rather than toward the house
• You are clearing acreage, a field edge or a rural lot rather than a tight suburban side yard
• Previous quotes all assumed climbing or crane work and you want to know if a simpler cut is possible
• Storm-damaged trees need to come down quickly and the drop zone is already ruined ground
• Multiple trees can be sequenced so each falls into space the previous one opened

How tree cutting actually works

   Confirm the drop zone in both length and width

   A whole tree needs roughly its height in clear ground in the fall direction, plus margin for scatter, bounce and hinge error. Side clearance matters as much as the centreline - canopies are wide.

   Read lean, weight distribution and wind

   Back lean, side lean and heavy one-sided canopies all fight a simple notch. Pull lines, wedges or a different method may be required before anyone starts the face cut.

   Watch forA crew that treats every tree as if it wants to fall where the notch points. Wood does not always obey the textbook hinge, especially when decayed.

   Set the notch and hinge wood deliberately

   The face notch defines direction; the hinge wood left between face and back cut steers the fall. Hinge thickness and evenness are the control system - not hope and a running chainsaw.

   Account for barber chair and dead-wood failure

   Some species and some decay patterns split upward from the back cut under tension. Dead trees and certain hardwoods need different sequences, deeper wedges, or abandoning open fell entirely.

   Process the stem and protect what is underneath

   Once down, the trunk is bucked, brush is chipped or piled, and stumps are cut to the agreed height. Ground protection for lawns and drives is part of the plan when equipment follows the fall.
