  1. Identifying the unit type first, because it changes the recommendation

    A technician should ask whether the machine sits on a counter, hangs over the range, or is built into a cabinet with a trim kit, before discussing any fault. The repair economics diverge so sharply that the same failed component produces opposite advice on the two. A shop that quotes without asking this is not thinking about your interests.

  2. The no-heat diagnosis, and why it is the expensive one

    A microwave that runs but does not heat has a fault in the high-voltage circuit - the magnetron, the high-voltage diode, the capacitor, or the transformer. Diagnosis needs specific equipment and technique, and this section of the appliance is the reason microwave repair is skilled work rather than a parts swap. It is also the fault where the part cost most often decides the verdict.

  3. Door interlocks, latches and the safety system

When saying yes is the wrong move:
  • It is a countertop unit with a high-voltage fault. This is the tab's bluntest verdict. A call-out plus a magnetron or transformer on a machine you can carry out to the car in one hand is money badly spent, whatever the shop says.
  • The cavity has arced through the paint to bare metal. The interior is a sealed cooking chamber and a burnt-through wall is not a serviceable part. Stop using it.
  • The door is bent, the seal face is damaged, or the hinge frame is distorted. The door is the containment. Anything that compromises how it closes is a replace-the-unit situation, not an adjust-it-and-carry-on one.
  • You are replacing the range or the cabinetry within the year. Over-the-range dimensions and venting arrangements should be decided alongside the range, not before it. Wait and buy once.
  • It has been in a house fire, a flood, or has visible corrosion in the cavity. No microwave that has been through any of those is worth restoring.
  • The only fault is the touch panel on a low-end machine. Panels are among the dearest parts fitted to the cheapest units, which is exactly where the arithmetic fails.

  • It is a countertop unit - is this repair honestly worth doing? Ask it directly and listen to how it is answered. A shop willing to tell you not to book is a shop worth using for the appliance that matters.
  • What is the part price for the high-voltage component before you order it? The no-heat repairs are the ones where the number decides everything, and you want it in writing before parts are on their way.
  • Will you test the diode and capacitor as well as the magnetron? They fail together and in sequence. Replacing one component without checking its neighbours is how a single repair becomes two.
  • Is the diagnostic charge refunded or credited against the work? On the cheapest appliance in the kitchen this is not a detail - it can be the entire difference between repairing and replacing.
  • For an over-the-range unit: is it ducted outside or recirculating, and are the filters current? It is your kitchen ventilation as well as your microwave, and neglected charcoal filters get mistaken for a failed blower.
  • If this one is not worth fixing, will you tell me what will fit the same opening? On a built-in or over-the-range unit the constraint is the cabinetry, not the appliance, and a technician who has just measured it can save you a return.

Cleaning, filters, lamps and slide-out waveguide covers are fine for an owner. Anything that involves removing the cabinet is not, regardless of how straightforward the video you watched made it look.
Yes - and it is the part people forget when they put the replacement off. The over-the-range unit carries the extractor blower, the grease filters and the cooktop light, so a dead microwave also means no ventilation over your burners. If only the fan or the light has failed, those are separately serviceable parts and worth repairing on their own.
