Full services directory How it worksFor prosAbout Get matched Call (866) 582-8523Cabinet maintenance is short: wipe spills quickly, clean grease with mild soap and water rather than harsh or abrasive cleaners, keep standing water away from the toe kick and sink base, and adjust hinges and glides once a year. Water is what actually kills cabinets; everything else is cosmetic.
The single most valuable habit is dealing with water immediately. A slow supply-line drip under a sink will destroy a particleboard base long before it makes a puddle you notice. Put a leak detector or even a folded towel under the sink and check it a few times a year.
For cleaning, mild dish soap and a damp cloth handles nearly all kitchen grease. Avoid abrasives, bleach-based sprays and heavy solvents on finished surfaces — KCMA's finish testing under ANSI/KCMA A161.1 covers ordinary household spills and detergents, not aggressive chemical cleaning. Dry the surface after wiping rather than leaving it wet, especially at door bottoms and near the dishwasher.
Steam is an underrated cabinet killer. An open dishwasher venting straight at a cabinet edge, or a kettle under a wall cabinet, delivers repeated moisture to the exact place finishes fail. Pull the dishwasher door fully open when it vents, and move the kettle.
Once a year, go around and tighten and adjust. Hinge screws loosen, doors drift out of alignment, drawer glides collect crumbs. Twenty minutes a year keeps a kitchen feeling tight for a very long time — and a kitchen that feels tight does not get replaced early.
