Redwood deck installation, heartwood first

Specify heartwood and grade in writing

All-heart, heartwood-dominant and construction grades behave differently in weather. Sapwood is lighter, less decay-resistant and will announce itself as the deck ages if mixed without a plan. Thickness, actual width and pattern (decking vs fascia vs rail stock) should be on the purchase order, not left to yard substitution when the truck is late. If the photos that sold you on redwood are all-heart clear, write that language into the order — “redwood” alone is not a product.

Watch for: A quote for “redwood” that allows the yard to ship whatever is in stock the week of build. Walk the packs before they are cut in when the job is large, and agree a reject allowance in writing.

Supply chain and lead time are part of the schedule

Outside strong supply regions, architectural redwood can be special-order with multi-week freight. Permits and crew dates should not assume same-week board availability. Confirm kiln-dried versus green stock — moisture drives gapping, fastener follow-up and when the first finish can stick. Staging boards off soil, stickered flat, is part of protecting the money you already spent.

Watch for: Breaking ground before boards are secured. Mid-project species swaps destroy the reason you paid for redwood and usually leave a visible mismatch at the joint between phases.

Structure remains ordinary excellence

Footings, ledger flashing, hangers rated for any treated framing, guards and stairs are the same non-negotiables as on a commodity deck. Many builds hybridise: treated posts and joists under a redwood walking surface. That is fine when hangers and screws match treated chemistry and the redwood is fastened for a soft face. Redwood does not buy a free pass on inspection or on water behind the ledger.

Watch for: Spending the visual budget on boards and nickel-and-diming connectors you will never see until they fail. Premium surface on a cheap ledger is a delayed catastrophe.

Sort the field before you fasten

Colour and grain vary board to board even inside one grade. Competent crews dry-lay or at least rack boards to distribute light and dark, keep sapwood edges off the showiest traffic lanes when the grade allows, and reject pieces with oversized defects for the agreed grade. Random grab-from-the-pile install is how expensive decks look accidental on week one and blotchy by year three.

Watch for: No time in the schedule for sorting. On clear redwood, layout is craft — if the bid assumes zero cull time, the culls still appear; they just get fastened anyway.

Fasten for a soft, high-value face

Like other softwoods, redwood dishes under overdriven screws and shows every wandering screw line forever on clear grades. Use appropriate exterior fasteners, consistent patterns, clutch settings that seat without cratering, and care near ends. Predrill when the species and end distance demand it. Hidden fastener systems only if the board profile and manufacturer system support them; do not improvise composite clips on square-edge redwood.

Watch for: Visible mangled screw lines on a showpiece grade — they will not “weather out.” Also watch bare steel fasteners that streak black with extractives and moisture.

Finish strategy: colour keep versus silver

UV will grey redwood if left unfinished. Some owners want that silvered look and only manage cleaning and structure; others maintain clear or semi-transparent finishes to keep red tones. Solid colours hide variation but need the same honest prep as any horizontal coating. Coordinate with a coatings pro if the first finish is part of handover, and never treat furniture varnish logic as deck logic.

Watch for: Film-forming varnish thinking borrowed from furniture interiors. Decks are horizontal weather machines — standing water and sun peel films that looked fine on a door.

Care handoff

Document grade, supplier lot notes if available, fastener type and finish product. Gentle cleaning only — aggressive pressure washing erodes soft earlywood bands and leaves permanent ridges. Plan refinish intervals by exposure and traffic, not by a single national slogan. First-season fastener checks after drying cycles are normal craft on softwood fields.

Watch for: No maintenance conversation at handover on a premium softwood deck, or a cleaner who only knows driveway PSI settings.
