Front door installation in the first-install sense means building or finishing a weather-tight rough opening, pan-flashing the sill, setting a pre-hung entry unit plumb and square, and tying the door into the wall’s water-resistive barrier so bulk water never reaches the framing. That is the job on new construction, additions and newly cut openings. If you already have a front door and are swapping it, the decisions are different — start with entry door replacement instead.

How front door installation actually works

Confirm this is a first install, not a replacement

If jambs, sill and exterior trim already exist and you are changing the unit, you are in replacement territory — insert versus full-frame, slab versus pre-hung into existing conditions. This page assumes the opening is new or fully rebuilt.

Rough opening, header and structure

The opening must be sized to the unit’s requirements with correct header support over the span. On load-bearing walls this is carpentry and sometimes engineering, not trim work. Dimensions are checked before the door is ordered when possible.

Watch for: Ordering a door from a showroom photo before the rough opening is measured and framed. Pre-hung units are unforgiving of “we will make it fit.”
Sill pan and flexible flashing — before the unit goes in

A pan that drains outward, properly integrated flashing legs, and continuity with the water-resistive barrier are what keep the subfloor and framing dry for decades. This is the step sales demos skip and leak callbacks always find.

Watch for: A unit set on bare sill plate with a bead of caulk as the plan. That is not a pan. Ask what product and sequence are used at the sill.
Setting the pre-hung unit plumb, level and square

Shims at hinge and strike locations, consistent margins, and a sill that supports without twisting the frame. The door must operate without binding before exterior trim hides the shims.

Watch for: Forcing the jamb to a bowed opening instead of correcting the framing. The door will tell on you every season as humidity moves the wall.
Air seal, insulation at the gap, exterior and interior finishes

Low-expansion foam or appropriate backer and sealant at the gap, then cladding-compatible exterior trim and interior casing. Hardware, closer and thresholds are adjusted last so weatherseals actually touch.

Watch for: High-expansion foam that bows jambs. Use products rated for doors and windows, applied with restraint.

First-time front door installation is priced as carpentry plus the unit: opening, flashing, set and finishes. Cutting a new opening in an existing wall costs more than setting into a framed new-construction opening. Unit price is only one line; structure and weather barrier work often dominate.

When front door installation is the wrong call

Everyone else ranking for this is paid when you say yes. Here's when you shouldn't.

You already have a door and only want a new look or better weatherseal. That is replacement or weatherstripping — different decisions, usually less structural work.
The wall needs a door but you have not resolved header, egress or exterior finish. Ordering the slab first creates a beautiful object that does not fit the project.
You expected a two-hour product install on a load-bearing cut-in. New openings are multi-trade projects when structure and siding are involved.
Moisture already pours into an existing entry. Fix water management and rot before celebrating a new unit in a compromised opening — or rebuild the opening on purpose under the replacement scope.
HOA or historic rules control exterior appearance and you have not checked them. A non-compliant door is an expensive return.

Do I need a pre-hung door for a new opening?

Almost always yes. A pre-hung unit includes jambs and sill designed to set as one assembly. Hanging a slab alone in a brand-new opening means building jambs from scratch — possible, but it is a different skill and rarely what homeowners mean by “install.”

How long does a first-time front door install take?

Setting into a prepared new-construction opening can be hours. Cutting an opening, framing a header, flashing and matching exterior finishes can take days. The unit’s lead time is often longer than the carpentry.

Can a big-box install programme do a new opening?

Those programmes are built around product delivery and a standard set into a ready opening. Structural cut-ins, rot repair and custom flashing sequences are often out of scope or subcontracted with narrow allowances. Ask in writing what happens if the opening is not ready.

What makes a new entry leak later?

Missing or reverse-lapped flashing, no sill pan, gaps in the water-resistive barrier, and jambs racked so weatherseals never compress. The door brand rarely causes those failures — the sequence does.

Should I replace the frame with the door?

If the jamb is rotten, out of square, or the threshold is failed, a full frame-in install is often smarter than hanging a beautiful slab in a bad opening. If the frame is sound and square, a slab or pre-hung swap can be enough. The opening condition decides — not the showroom door alone.
