What is entry door replacement?
Entry door replacement means swapping the front or exterior door of your home - and the single decision that drives the price is how much of the opening you replace. A slab swap reuses your existing frame and hinges. A pre-hung unit brings a new frame, and the trim and interior casing come off. A full-frame rebuild opens the wall back to the framing. Most homeowners are quoted for one and end up needing another.
Signs you need entry door replacement
- You can see daylight at a corner of the closed door - not along an edge, but at a corner, which means the frame is no longer square
- The bottom of the jamb is soft, dark or crumbles when you press a screwdriver into it - that is rot, and a new slab will not fix it
- The door needs a shoulder or a lift to latch, and adjusting the strike plate has stopped helping
- A steel door has rust blooming through the paint at the bottom rail, or a wood door has delaminated veneer
- The glass in a sidelite or the door itself has fogged between the panes

How entry door replacement actually works
Measurement, and the squareness check nobody advertises
A pro measures the rough opening in three places across the width and three down the height, then checks diagonals. If the two diagonals differ, the opening is racked and a drop-in unit will bind.

Deciding slab, pre-hung, or full-frame
Slab only works when the existing jamb is sound, plumb and square, and the new door is hung on the same hinge locations. Pre-hung replaces the jamb, threshold and weatherstripping as a unit. Full-frame goes back to the studs and is what you need when the sheathing behind the trim is wet.

Door selection - material by exposure, not by brochure

What matters is how much weather actually hits the door: a south-facing entry with no porch is a different specification from a recessed north-facing one.

Sidelites, transoms and the price multiplier
Adding or keeping sidelites and a transom turns a single door into a multi-panel unit. That changes the rough opening, the header load in some cases, and the price bracket entirely.

Removal, flashing and the sill pan
The old unit comes out, the opening is inspected, and a sill pan is fitted under the threshold so any water that gets past the door is drained back outside rather than into the subfloor. Flashing tape laps over the pan and under the housewrap.
Watch forNo sill pan. This is the most commonly skipped step in the entire job, it is invisible once the trim goes on, and it is the reason the floor rots five years later. Ask to see it before the unit goes in.
Setting, shimming and hardware
The unit is shimmed plumb at the hinges and at the strike, fastened through the shims into the framing, and the reveal around the door is checked for evenness top to bottom. Then the lockset, deadbolt and strike plate are fitted.
Watch forShort strike-plate screws. A deadbolt into a 3/4-inch screw seated in the jamb only is decorative - the screws need to reach the framing behind it.

When entry door replacement is the wrong call
When saying yes is the wrong move:
- The door is fine and the problem is the weatherstripping. A draught along one edge is usually a $15 seal or a dropped threshold, not a $3,000 door. Replace the seal, adjust the threshold screws, and see what is left.
- You are replacing it purely for resale. Door resale figures quoted across this industry come from surveys asking real-estate agents what they think a feature adds - not from paired sale data. Treat them as sentiment, not as a return. Replace the door because it leaks, sticks or looks tired to you.
- The rot is in the framing, not the door. If the sheathing behind the trim is wet, a new door goes into a wet hole. Find the water source first - usually a missing sill pan, a failed porch flashing or grading that drains toward the house.
- You want a wood door on a fully exposed entry with no overhang. It will need refinishing every two to three years and will fail early. This is a case where fiberglass with a wood-grain finish is the honest answer, even though it is less satisfying.
- An addition or porch is planned within a couple of years. If the entry is being rebuilt anyway, doing the door twice is money burnt on a second set of trim and flashing.
What to check when hiring for entry door replacement
- Are you quoting a slab, a pre-hung unit, or a full-frame replacement? These are three different jobs at three different prices. Comparing a slab quote against a pre-hung quote and picking the cheaper one is the most common way homeowners get this wrong.
- Did you measure the rough opening and check it for square? If the answer is "we used the door size", the quote is provisional and you will hear about it on install day.
- Is a sill pan included, and what flashing goes under the threshold? The one detail that decides whether the floor under the door is dry in ten years. It is invisible once fitted, so it is the easiest thing to leave out.
- Who is physically doing the work - your employees or a subcontractor? Worth asking of anyone, and especially of a retail install program. Home Depot and Lowe's both sell installation and both fulfil it through local contractors you do not choose and are not told about in advance. That is not automatically bad - but you should know whose insurance and whose workmanship warranty you are relying on.
- What happens to the price if the opening needs carpentry once it is open? Get the hourly rate and the approval process in writing before work starts. This is where a $1,200 job becomes $4,000, and it is nearly always discovered after the old door is already out.
- Who warranties the labour, and for how long, separately from the door warranty? The manufacturer covers the door. Almost every failure you will actually experience - binding, air leaks, water intrusion - is an installation issue, which the manufacturer will not touch.
