A GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) outlet watches for current leaving the hot and not returning on the neutral — the signature of current taking a path through a person or water — and opens in a fraction of a second. Installation is either a GFCI receptacle at the location, sometimes protecting outlets wired downstream on its load terminals, or a GFCI breaker that protects the whole circuit from the panel. Getting line and load wrong is the most common reason a new device will not reset.

Decide device, breaker, or both strategies
A GFCI receptacle at the first outlet on a circuit can protect everything wired to its load side. A GFCI breaker protects every outlet and splice on that circuit. Scattered wet-location outlets often favour a breaker; a single bathroom or garage feed often favours a device. Mixing without a plan leaves dead zones that look protected and are not.
Watch for: Six expensive receptacles quoted when one breaker would protect the same circuit for less labour and fewer failure points.
Identify line versus load before anything is landed
Power from the panel lands on the line terminals. Downstream outlets that should share protection land on the load terminals. Reverse them and the device may refuse to reset or may not protect what you think it does. This is the step DIY videos rush and where most call-backs start.
Watch for: A device that only works with nothing on the load terminals — often a downstream fault or reversed conductors, not a "bad GFCI out of the box".
Check box fill, grounding and multi-wire circuits
GFCI devices are bulkier than plain receptacles. Overfilled boxes and damaged grounds are common in older kitchens and baths. Multi-wire branch circuits need handle-tied or two-pole protection strategies; a single-pole GFCI in the wrong place can create hazardous neutral issues.
Watch for: Forcing a deep device into a shallow box until the plate barely sits flat. Heat and pinched insulation follow.
Weather-resistant and tamper-resistant where the location demands
Outdoor and some damp locations need weather-resistant GFCI devices and in-use covers that close over a cord. Dwelling receptacles in most current adoptions also need tamper-resistant construction. The right device is location-specific, not "whatever was on the truck".
Watch for: An indoor-only GFCI on an exterior wall with a flimsy cover. It will fail early and may not meet inspection.
Test, label and explain the reset path
Every new GFCI should be tested with its button and, ideally, a plug-in tester. If it protects downstream outlets, those locations should be labelled so the next person knows where to reset. You should leave knowing which bathroom button kills the garage, if that is how the house is wired.
Watch for: No labels on protected downstream outlets. The first rainstorm becomes a treasure hunt.
Replacing a single receptacle with a GFCI is usually a modest service-call job. Protecting a full circuit with a GFCI breaker, adding outdoor weather-resistant devices, or correcting reverse line/load and box problems costs more. A receptacle can be dead at the face and live on the line terminals. Multi-wire circuits and shared neutrals can energise parts of a box you did not expect. If you cannot prove the circuit is de-energised at the conductors — not just that a plug-in tester is blank — stop.
Are you protecting this location with a receptacle, a breaker, or a combination?
Determines price, reset location and how many devices you actually need.
Will downstream outlets be protected on the load side, and will they be labelled?
Unlabelled load protection is how people think a dead garage is a power outage.
Is a weather-resistant device and in-use cover included for outdoor locations?
Indoor-rated parts outdoors fail early and often fail inspection.
Have you checked for a multi-wire branch circuit or shared neutral?
Wrong GFCI strategy on these circuits is a serious fault, not a minor miss.
If the existing device trips constantly, will you diagnose the load before replacing parts repeatedly?
