  1. Decide device, breaker, or both strategies

    Watch for: Forcing a deep device into a shallow box until the plate barely sits flat. Heat and pinched insulation follow.

  4. Weather-resistant and tamper-resistant where the location demands

    Outdoor and some damp locations need weather-resistant GFCI devices and in-use covers that close over a cord. Dwelling receptacles in most current adoptions also need tamper-resistant construction. The right device is location-specific, not "whatever was on the truck".

    Watch for: An indoor-only GFCI on an exterior wall with a flimsy cover. It will fail early and may not meet inspection.

  5. Test, label and explain the reset path

    Every new GFCI should be tested with its button and, ideally, a plug-in tester. If it protects downstream outlets, those locations should be labelled so the next person knows where to reset. You should leave knowing which bathroom button kills the garage, if that is how the house is wired.

    Watch for: No labels on protected downstream outlets. The first rainstorm becomes a treasure hunt.
